Nasser May Day
Address Called
New War Threat

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Friday, May 9, 1969-45

Boris Smolar's

JERUSALEM (JTA) - Foreign
Minister Abba Eban said the May
Day speech of President Gamal
Abdel Nasser of Egypt bad
strengthened Israel's resolve to
fortify itself along the Suez Canal
cease-fire line. Col. Nasser declar-
ed in Cairo that the shelling of
Israeli positions on the canal's
east bank would continue and was
a phase in an all-out military effort
to drive Israel back from the
waterway. He threatened to strike
Israeli civilian targets.
Eban said in a Kol Israel radio
interview that Israel's willingness
for peace continues but that Col.
Nasser not only avoided any men-
tion of peace in his address but
actually rebels against the idea.
"This is the speech of a man for
whom the mere idea of a relation-
ship of peace and mutual respect
is not to be countenanced," Eban
'said. "This speech must, of neces-
sity, dispel any illusion that may
still prevail in any capital in the
world that the possibility of peace
still exists in the conscious
thoughts of this ruler."
Israelis ridiculed Col. Nasser's
claim that 68 per cent of the Bar
Ley Line, Israel's fortifications
on the Suez Canal, had been de-
stroyed by Egyptian shelling.
Some observers claimed to see
in the Egyptian leader's May
Day speech a defensive note
that indicated he realized that
Egypt was not ready for all-out
war with Israel. They said that
while Col. Nasser claimed Is-
rael's April 30 commando raid
into southern Egypt was a "com-
plete failure" because it was
anticipated by Egyptian InteM-
gence, he also noted that such
raids were "unexpected" and
could not always be avoided. The
observers suggested that the
May Day speech was aimed at
militant elements in Egypt in-
cluding military officers who
have become restive in recent
months.
Eban earlier said that King
Hussein of Jordan has admitted
that his talk of peace during his
official visit to Washington was a
matter of tactics and that he was
actually preparing for a new mili-
tary campaign against Israel.
Eban, addressing newsmen at a
foreign ministry briefing, referred
to a speech by the Jordanian mon-
arch in Amman the day before
which he said was a far cry from I
his peace program announced in
Washington.
In an address to his people, King
Hussein said the Arab states would
end their belligerency against Is-
rael only if and when the Israelis
handed over all the occupied ter-
ritory, including Jerusalem. "Eith-
er this or there can be no peace,"
King Hussein said, adding that he
and Col. Nasser supported the
goals of Arab guerrilla warfare

take in helping to keep Jewish life vital and relevant "in the crucial
years ahead."
The family's socio-economic status had little bearing on the apos-
tasy rate, the study showed. Little difference in the apostasy rate was
also found between students descended from American-born grand-
parents or from grandparents born abroad. Jewish girl students show-
ed almost as high an apostasy rate as boys. Students who grew up in
small towns and cities were somewhat more likely to retain their Jew-
ish identity than those who grew up in large cities or in suburbs of
large cities. Jewish students who were on bad terms with their families
were almost four times as likely to be apostates as those who enjoyed
good parental relations.
Apostasy was found to increase steadily with increasing intellec-
tual commitment. The study attributes this phenomenon to the fact
that the life style of the intellectual in America tends to remove the
individual from communal ties.
In the light of these facts. CJFWE's intensification of its program
to attract college youth and faculty to participation in Jewish communal
affairs is of profound importance. Several experimental cooperative
projects in expanding service to Jewish students are also being under-
taken jointly by the National Jewish Welfare Board and Hillel Foun-
dations.
