Students Celebrating With Israel

Last Suziamer's Study Yields This Year's Trip

The second annual Summer Is-
rael Youth Ulpan sponsored by the
Jewish Center June 30-Aug. 21,
will provide an intensive Hebrew
language experience in Israel for
those who completed the 1968 De-
troit Summer Ulpan and weekly
follow up sessions (see last week's
youth page).
Formal class sessions are held
25 mornings. The eight-week sched-
ule includes 10 days touring Is-
rael. visits to a kibutz, a weekend
in Jerusalem, time spent with Is-
raeli familes and at least three
weekends for free time.
The - buddy system." designed to
help gain a command of the He-
brew language, is being arranged
by the Jewish Agency's youth de- '
partment. Suitable high school stu-1
dents will join their American
"buddies" each afternoon and par-
ticipate with them in all of their
activities for the remainder of the
day. including the group's planned
tours.
Thus, the student will have the
maximum opportunity' to practice

Akiva Hebrew Day School, now
in its fifth year, will have an open

Student Writers Win
Press Club Awards

A local Wayne State University
coed and a Henry Ford High
School senior placed first in two
categories of the Detroit Press
Club Foundation annual awards
last Friday.
They are Judith Frutig, who won
$350 in the college division feature
writing category; and Robert
I Sklar, who won $350 for general
writing ability.
In addition, three local Univer-
sity of Michigan writers who re-
ceived awards in the competition
were Lloyd Graff, second in fea-
ture writing, Martin Hirschman,
second, expression of opinion; and
Daniel Zwerdling, third, news re-
porting. They received $200 and
$100 prizes.
The student awards were among
22 in college student and profes-
sional competition, plus five in
high school competition.
