WSU Law Alumni Name Judge Wise to Be Honored for Distinguished Work The board of governors of the Wayne State University Law Alumni Association has named Circuit Court Judge John M. Wise as a recipient of the ,association's Distinguished Alumni Award for 1969. Two other alumni will receive awards during the school's an- nual Law Alumni Day Saturday. They are former Royal Oak Muni- cipal Judge Keith J. Leenhouts and S. Jerry Cohen of Washington, D.C., a member of the staff of Sen. Philip A. Hart. This award, first presented by the association in 1967, is given to those graduates of the law school who have had distinguished pro- fessional careers and who have thereby brought distinction to the law school and the university. served as staff director and chief counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee's Antitrust and Mon- opoly Subcommittee. He directed the hearings and supervised the staff work which led to passage of the Truth in Packaging Act. Cohen also has conducted major inquiries into various industries and into questions of economic con- centration, conglomerate mergers and the cost of medical care. Be- fore moving to Washington, D.C., Cohen practiced law in Detroit for five years and headed the criminal division of the state attor- ney general's office for more than two years. Judge Wise, 61, a native of Peek- skill, N.Y., has lived in Detroit since 1920. _ A graduate of Wayne University Law School, he has practiced law in Detroit since 1930, adjudicating cases for 15 years as a referee in Recorder's Court-Traffic and Or- dinance Division. He was elected Wayne County Circuit Court judge in April 1959 and re-elected 1966 for a term ending Dec. 31, 1976. Judge Wise is a past president of Probus Club and former sove- reign prince of Carson Council of Princes of Jerusalem. He received the Scottish Rite Service Club's highest honor, a diamond emblem, and was elevat- ed to the 33rd and last degree of the Masons in 1967. The judge is a former member of the board of Temple Beth El Men's Club and board member and community relations commit- tee member of the Jewish Com- munity Council. He organized gov- ernmental employes and was first chairman for the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit. A former member of the board of directors, Detroit Service Group, he is past civic affairs chairman for Greater Detroit Bnai Brith Council and former president of Detroit Lodge. He also is past president of Wayne State University Law Alumni As- sociation, honorary member of De- troit Police Lieutenants and Ser- geants Association; member and legal adviser of Crisis Club; board member of Wayne County Civic League; board member of Mich- ' igan Regional Advisory Board, ADL, member of Lawyers Com- mittee of the United Foundation Community Drive; member Labor Zionist Organization; vice presi- dent of Old Newsboys Goodfellow Fund; board member of Detroit Men's ORT; member of Michigan State Bar Committe on Court Ad- ministration and public relations committee. Haffkine. The grove, located in the Judean Hills, will be sponsored by the Haffkine International Memo- rial Committee, recently establish- ed here. Dr. Haffkine, born in Russia, developed the first successful vac- cines against cholera and bubonic plague.
