Jewish Agency Planning
to Broaden Aliya Scope

LONDON (JTA)—The head of
the Jewish Agency's information
and organization department said
: here Monday that one of the most
important tasks facing the Zion-
ist movement was to "find a way
to the hearts and minds of the
young generation of Jewish men
and women."
Avraham Schenker told JTA
prior to his departure for the
United States and Canada that
that task had ideological and prac-
tical aspects. He said he planned
to broaden the scope of his depart-
ment's public relations and in-
formation services in Britain and
elsewhere to meet changing times
and condition.
Schenker thought the British
Zionist movement, despite its
"tradition of great achieve-
ments," did not play a suffi-
ciently large role in the arena
of world Zionism.
He said there might have beer
reasons for this in the past "but
there seems to be no reason now
why British Zionism should not
make a greater impact in the
councils of the world Zionist move-
ment and world Jewry as a whole."

ence quoted from an alleged let-
ter from Oestreicher to Truman,
dated July 12, 1968. In it the writ-
er said that the Jewish Advisory
Board "did not want to be re-
sponsible for not rehiring Rabbi
Goldman in a frame of refer-
, ence in which he would be the
only university appointee . .
who was refused re-appointment
for the forthcoming academic ,
year."

The statement also quoted from
a letter of July 22, 1968. in which
Truman severely criticized Rev.
Starr for statements he allegedly
made during a campus rally. Rev.
Starr and Rabbi Goldman received
their dismissal notices last month.
Rabbi Goldman said his dismis-
sal was without explanation and
that the Jewish Advisory Board
gave no official reason for their
action. He said he was fired be-
cause his sympathy with student
protesters damaged the "Jewish
image" which the Jewish Advisory
Board wanted to maintain before
the "Wasp (Protestant) establish-
ment."
At least two other unrelated
campus groups are supporting
Rabbi Goldman and Rev. Starr.
The Ad Hoc Committee for Free-
dom for University Clergy was
formed last month. Its chairman,

Keith Karnofsky, a Columbia grad-
uate now attending Hebrew Union
College, said the group planned
"to research the issue," distribute

leaflets and hold campus demon-
strations.
The Earl Hall Student Govern-
ing Board issued a statement last
month warning that the dismissal
of Rabbi Goldman and Rev. Starr
"raises serious questions as to the
appointment of campus ministers
and the safeguarding of their
freedom in that ministry."

The dull period in the life of an
event is when it ceases to be news
and has not begun to be history.
