New Yorkers Cite Danes for Rescuing Jews in War

NEW YORK (JTA)—New York's
academic community will pay trib-
ute to the government and people
of Denmark here Saturday for the
rescue of almost the entire Jewish
community of that country by
their Danish fellow citizens.
A program of music and dance
featuring international artists will
mark the escape of Denmark's
Jews to Sweden in 1943 after they
were slated for dbportation to
Nazi death camps. The event will
be sponsored by Tribute to the
Danes, Inc., a foundation which
provides scholarships in Israel for
Danish -youth.

in recognition of its efforts to save
Danish Jews. The plaque was ac-
cepted by Lorenz Petersen, con-
sul general of Denmark in Chic-
ago.

Deeds
I came into this world, not
chiefly to make this a good place
to live in, but to live in it, be it
good or bad. A man has not every-
thing to do, but something; and be-
cause he cannot do everything, it
is not necessary that he should do
something wrong. — Henry David
Thoreau.

Justice Arthur J. Goldberg,
American Jewish Committee
president, will be principal
speaker, according to Elias

of

Springer also asserted that a

strong stand by the Western pow-
ers in the present Mid East dead-
lock would pay off for the West.
He characterized the Russians as
seeking to be "chief mediators,
while at the same time playing
the role of quasi-belligerents" in
the Mid East.
The publisher, who recently visi-
ted Israel, said that the Israelis
were not "basically hostile" to the
Arabs and that they were ready
to negotiate outstanding issues
"but only after the Arabs have
also shown willingness to nego-
tiate."
Meanwhile, he added, the Is-
raelis "are not prepared to give
up a square foot of the soil they
hold." He said he was certain that
the Israeli stand "will finally
create prosperity and peace in the
region for both Arabs and Jews."

Von Thadden to Run
for Bundestag Seat

BONN (JTA) — Adolf von Thad-
den, National Democratic Party
chairman said he will run this year
for election to the Bundestag, the
West German lower house, and his
party will spend $2,500,000 to gain
seats for its candidates.
He also said a general in the
West German army was a NPD
member but declined to identify
him.
In a related development, the
Western Allies have turned down
requests by West Berlin Mayor
Klaus Schutz and the City Senate
to outlaw the NPD in that city.
West Germany's new minister of
justice is concerned over the detri-
mental effects the NPD may have
on Germany's image abroad but he
does not believe it constitutes a
danger at home.
Replying in the Bundestag to
questions about possible govern-
ment action to ban the party as
anti-democratic, Horst Ehmke said
that from a foreign policy point of
view, the NPD could harm Ger-
many, especially if it won seats in
the Bundestag in the forthcoming
national election. He said that an
electoral victory would give NPD
members a forum for inflamatory
speeches that would be quoted
abroad and reflect badly on the
Federal Republic.
