"A Tanta Is Not a Madame"
(New Voices Publishing Co.) des-
cribes an eventful — that's put-
ting it mildly — summer in the
life of 16-year-old Goldie Solomon
of Detroit, sent off to New York
by her parents to learn a little
of the world from her auntie.

It's quite a world — peopled by
some pretty amoral characters,
notably the jolly Auntie Mame of
Third Avene. Tanta Mimeh Yenta
emerges fairly unscathed from a
series of family tragedies ' that
drive her poor Irish husband over
the brink. Her live-and-let-live
philosophy is somewhat annoying
— particularly uncharacteristic of
a Jewish mother — but it appar-
ently works for her.
Mrs. Drapkin claims the Prohibi-
tion Era story is true; she is the
Goldie of the summer's tale. But
it is hoped that Goldie (or Frita),
somewhat wiser after that wild
few months, did not return to
school and write a composition on
"How I Spent My Summer Vaca-
tion." —C. D.
