"Poprostu," fought against anti -
Semitism with determination. This
group went on record: "The Jews
will eventually leave but anti-Sem-
itism will stay. We shall not cease
to be threatened by a parody —
nationalism, obscurantism and pol-
itical perfidy, always ready to pick
on each of us as their new vic-
tim."
The present anti-Semitic cam-
paign in Poland must, therefore,
be viewed and judged against
these facts. Now, thousands of
Jews have left Poland and many
more wait for their exit permits.
It is a true mass exodus. In
this respect, the Nationalist-Com-
munists of Poland have achieved
one of the aims of the Nazis.
Soon Poland will be without a
single Jew: — "Judenrein."
Let it be said that not everybody
in Poland applauds this develop-
ment. There is an elite in Poland
which resents it. But these people
cannot raise their voices. Just be-
fore the Six-Day War, there ap-
peared in Poland a book on the
collaboration between Jews and
Poles during the Warsaw Ghetto ,
Revolt. This book is now banned.
The author of the book is Wlady-
ment before he bad read the
Czerniakow Diary.
Remember Dr. Nahum Gold-
mann's warning, way back in 1963:
"There is a responsibility which
rests with us. We in the free world
have continued with our routine.
Jewish communities had not the
courage to adopt dramatic ways
and means of protest and pressure
which the situation demanded."
On the anniversary of the War-
saw Ghetto Revolt, it behooves us
to re-read and re-think the docu-
ments about the events and the
people who were so tragically in-
volved in them.

A few weeks ago, Col. Kazimierz
Iranek-Osmecki, who spent a
lengthy period in Poland under the
Nazis and was later head of the
division for occupied Poland at the
Polish General Staff in London,
published a book in Polish. It is
called "He Who Saves One Life"
and it contains a number of re-
markable documents about the
by
Ghetto of Warsaw. We also have
now the "Diary of Adam Czer-
niakow," published by Yad Vas-
hem, in its original Polish and in a
Hebrew translation, with an intro-
duction in English by Joseph Ker-
misch. This is the diary of a man
who was the head of the Jewish
Council and later committed sui-
cide when he discovered that the
Nazis were trying to use him as
an instrument of their devilish plan
to exterminate the Jews of the
Warsaw Ghetto.
Something of the flavor of this
book should be known to all Jews,
wherever they are, and I quote
from the introduction by Kermisch:
"In his contacts with the
authorities Czerniakow conducted
himself as a representative of
the Jews who would surrender
nothing of his dignity and honor;
and his bearing and modest way
of life, his power of organiza-
tion and his diligence, his cour-
age and his fairness, gained
