Israel Repulses Arab Guerrillas in Border Clashes

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Egyptian
artillery resumed shelling Israeli
positions across the Suez Canal
shortly after noon Tuesday. Their
fire was concentrated in the Port
Tewfik area and later spread to
the Bitter Lakes section and Kan-
tara near the canal's northern end.

Israel's casualties in Monday's from
Essen who were to visit Rus-

two wounded. A military spokes-
man announced Tuesday that Pri-
vate Israel Blai, of Kibutz Hacho-
shrim. died of wounds. The other
fatality, announced Monday, was
Lt. Omri Tachower, of Kibutz

Gvaram.

Military sources disclosed that

six Egyptian MIG and four Israeli
Jets were involved in Monday's
aerial dogfight over the Suez

sia to bear eye-witness testimony
in the case of three former SS
(Elite Corps) officers charged with
shooting more than 100 concentra-
tion camp inmates near Mauthau-
sen during World War II. The
jury has already heard evidence
in Warsaw and in the United
States where one of the witnesses
was the German rocket expert,
Dr. Werner von Braun. They were
scheduled to go to Russia on May !
5.
Soviet authorities have provided
the West German ministry of jus-
tice with microfilmed documents
relating to Nazi war crimes, but
their refusal to admit the Essen
jury indicated to some observers
here that Moscow was not ready
to fully help prosecute Nazi crim-
inals.

tory. Israeli gunners were reportd
ed Monday to have scored direct
hits on Egyptian artillery positions

inflicted significant casualties.

Dr. Maier said today that Ortho-
dox patients were continuing to
use the hospital contrary to the
sect's claim that it was being boy-
cotted. He noted that the daughter-
in-law of Rabbi Joseph Sheinber-
ger, leader of the "Eidat Haredit"
had just registered for the hospi-
tal's maternity ward.
Dr. Maier, a pathologist origin-
ally from New York and himself
Orthodox, has followed the policy
set by his predecessor at the hos-
pital which is to let the officiating
rabbi rule when a post mortem is
permissible according to Jewish
religious law. The extr e mist
groups do not recognize the hospi-
tal's rabbi whom they allege is not
sufficiently Orthodox. Dr. Maier
charged that the sect was using
"Hitlerian techniques" in its cam-
paign against him. _

Fatah is trying to maintain its re-
putation as an effective guerrilla
force by inviting journalists to
accompany commando units on
ostensible sorties against Israel.
The journalists are taken by truck
during the night to the banks of
the Zarka River, a small tributary
of the Jordan which the guerrillas
pass off as the genuine Jordan
River.
While the correspondent waits,
the guerrillas ford the stream with
rubber tubes. They return shortly
and report that they have planted
explosives under an "Israeli power
station." The journalist is suppos-
ed to be convinced of their story
by an explosion which follows a
few minutes later.
The returned travellers said that
El Fatah also stages fake gun-
battles across the spurious Jordan
with their own men firing over
each other's heads from opposite
banks for the benefit of the news
media.
Meanwhile, from London, Bagh-
dad radio announced that four
Iraquis were executed before dawn
for allegedly spying for the United
States. It said the four were all
Moslems and did not specify the
manner of their execution in the
Baghdad Central Prison. Presum-
ably they were hanged.
