Activities of Jews Appeal to Congress on Israeli Support

A news release from the infor-
mation department of the Soviet
embassy in Washington contains a
report on Jewish writers who are
listed in the fifth volume of the
500-page "Short Literary Encyclo-
pedia" which just came off the
press in Moscow.
The article, written for Novosti
Press Agency by Semyon Rabin°.
vich, refers to special articles
about Itzhak Leibush Peretz and
other noted writers.
Analyses of the Peretz works
written by Riva Rubina who noted
that "women — tender and loving,
sometimes proud and independent,
protesting against their sightless-
ness—hold a special place in Pe-
retz's works." A Peretz biography
is included in the essay on his
many stories, poems and essays
in Hebrew, Russian and Yiddish.
Other articles in the encyclopedia
are about Pinhos Kaganovich Nis-
ter, who is described as having
influenced Soviet Jewish literature
tremendously: Hirsh Osherovich,
Hirsh Polyanker, and other Rus-
sian authors: and special articles
about non-Russian Jewish writers
like Moshe Nadir, Shmuel Niger
and others.

Senate Aging Committee
Report Calls for Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Every
tenth American-20,000,000 persons
of age 65 and over — are facing
chronic problems that seem to in-
tensify even while new opportuni-
ties dawn for more secure and
satisfying lives in retirement.
This apparent paradox is docu-
mented in a new annual report re-
leased by the U. S. Senate Special
Committee on Aging. The report—
recognizing that "economic prob-
lems dominated all developments

ciple to plan to free 15 merchant
ships stranded in the Suez Canal
since the June 1967 War under
the direction of the United Na-
tions, according to Edward Heath,
Conservative Party leader, who
just returned from a visit to Israel
and Egypt.
The Sunday Express reported
that Heath said the plan provided
for the UN to undertake imme-
diately full responsibility for a de-
tailed survey of the canal's south-
ern end. This would establish pre-
cisely what dredging work was
necessary to open a route to the
Red Sea for the trapped vessels.
According to the news p a p er ,
Heath saw a good chance for a
breakthrough so long as super-
vision of the survey remained en-
tirely in the hands of Lt. Gen. Odd
Bull, chief of the UN truce obser-
vation team in the Middle East.
The paper said the Conservative
leader would demand this week
that Foreign Secretary Michael
Stewart follow up at the UN his
personal diplomatic initiative.
Heath said on his departure from
Jerusalem on Friday that he real-
ized that Israel's main objective
was peace. He doubted that the
Big Four would be able to force a
solution to the Mid East deadlock
but felt they might propose an
arrangement that would contribute
toward finding a solution. While in
Israel, Heath met with Prem-
ier Golda Meir and with a group
of Arab leaders from East Jeru-
salem and the West Bank.
The Financial Times reported
from Cairo that the World Bank
had agreed in principle to provide
foreign exchange financing need-
ed to deepen and widen the Suez
Canal so that it might accommo-
date 200,000 deadweight ton super-
tankers. The Times said its source
of information was Ma nsour
Khalil, deputy director of the Suez
Canal Authority, who claimed the
World Bank's offer was made by
a mission to Cairo last fall.
Heath has suggested in a letter
to Foreign Secretary Stewart that
the United Nations map out a time
table for a survey of the southern
end of the Suez Canal preliminary
to clearing operations that would
free 15 merchant ships.
