THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, April 18, 1969-11 Toynbee Rebuked by Dr. Albright Prof. William F. Albright, who was in Jerusalem recently to re- ceive an award as a "Worthy of Jerusalem," had interesting opin- ions on the views of the historian Arnold Toynbee in which Israel's doom was predicted. Commenting on the anti-Jewish views of Toynbee, whose antagon- ism to Israel made him a welcome guest in Arab countries, Dr. Al- bright said: "Great men have their weak- nesses: Arnold Toynbee's is that he Is a Victorian romanticist who sees Arabs not as human beings but as heroes of Romance, chil- dren of nature and Arabian Nights' characters rolled into one. "If anything is absolute non- sense, it is Toynbee's idea that Is- rael originated in national fana- ticism and separatism." He added that if Israel had not remained steadfast in its faith during the thousand years after Moses, the "world would have been the loser." As Moslems view the Old and New Testaments as forgeries, said Prof. Albright, he therefore saw no common ground in the foresee- able future between Moslem ;.nd Christian-Jewish scholars. "This is very regrettable and we must find some way to bridge it."
