Arab Commandos HIAS Presents
See Sirhan as Hero Award to Javits

BEIRUT—The Palestine Libera-
tion Organization has begun dis-
tributing posters depicting Sirhan
B. Sirhan as a heroic Arab com-
mando, it was reported by William
Tuony in the Los Angeles Times.
Testimony in the Sirhan murder
trial ended Tuesday after 90 wit-
nesses and three months in court.
Several hundred thousand post-
ers are reportedly being distributed
in Arab countries, according to
the PLO, while others have been
printed in English and French for
use in Europe, writes Tuony.
The posters claim that "Zionist
quarters in America" were trying
to distort the motive for Sirhan's
action in slaying Robert F. Ken-
nedy.
Although Sirhan's trial has been
widely reported in the Arab press,
Arab governments adopted a
hands-off policy, and very little
editorial comment has been made
about the trial.

Freiheit Defends
Pro-Israel Stand
Against Attacks

NEW YORK (JTA)—The morn-
ing Freiheit, a left-wing Yiddish
daily, is at odds with the U.S.
Communist Party which has criti-
cized it, and another left-wing
publication, Jewish Currents, for
supporting Israel in a "war of ag-
gression" against the Arabs and
for its alleged "obsession with
black anti-Semitism."
The Freiheit was defended against
both charges by its 77-year-old edi-
tor, Paul Novick at the publica-
tion's 47th anniversary concert in
Town Hall. Novick, who once faced
federal denaturalization proceed-
ings for alleged Communist affili-
ations, declared that his paper was
"against all slogans and individ-
uals that are anti-Semitic but was
not against the Negro people." He
said the Freiheit's policy was to
continue fighting for full equality
for Negroes.
He drew an ovation from the
1,400 people at the concert when he
said "Israel is here to stay and its
existence is in the interest of all
progressive nations." Novick de- ,
scribed the Freiheit as not a Corn-
munist organ but a newspaper
"that fights for all the people in
their quest for peace throughout
the world."
His paper and the magazine Jew.
ish Currents were also accused by
by the Communist Party of main-
taining a "critical and carping at
titude toward the Soviet Union."
Questioned about Soviet hostility
toward Israel, Novick said only
that "Jews occupy high positions
in the Soviet Union."

El Fatah Takes Over
Where Liberation Front
Left Off in Gaza Strip

TEL AVIV—The El Fatah guer-
rilla organization is apparently
filling an anti-Israel propaganda
vacuum in the Gaza Strip created
by Israeli quashing of the Pales-
tine Liberation Front, which had
operated in the area.
El Fatah has sent its operatives
to the strip from Jordan via the
Sinai. Its activities are carried on
mainly in the strip's southern sec-
tion and are based in refugee
camps.
The Arabs are smuggling in
underground literature, including
books dealing with guerrilla war-
fare. Israeli security forces have
discovered some 50 copies in Ara-
bic of Menahem Begin's book en-
titled "The Revolt" which tells the
story of the Irgun Zvai Leumi's
struggle against the British Man-
datory authorities.
The Gaza Strip is still tense.
Some 11 schools remain closed
and will reopen only after prin-
cipals and teachers cooperate in
preserving order, Israeli authori-
ties said.

Houston Paper Attacks
School for 'Insensitivity
to Religious Feelings'

HOUSTON (JTA) — The Jewish
Herald Voice has called on the
Jewish community of Houston to
confront school authorities over
"insensitivity" on their part to the
religious feelings of the Jewish
community and Jewish students.
The paper, in its current issue.
editorially took exception to the
scheduling of graduation exercises
on a Friday evening. It pointed
out that "school would conflict
with the religious observances of
some of the students." It noted
that "when this was called to
their attention in November. or
perhaps, October. the changes
could have been made. But an in
sensitive school system has little
use for the decencies which make
up our democratic process."•
The editorial, citing previous
instances in which the religious
beliefs of Jewish students were
ignored by school authorities,
asked: "Are we to continue to
countenance this insensitivity to
the detriment of our religious
beliefs? Should there not be a
confrontation in this regard
which would clear up the atmos-
phere and anticipate the differ-
ences which might arise without
resorting to last-minute ap-
peals?"

lisher of the Jewish Herald-Voice.

Israel Spends S2 Million
a Day for Defense

TEL AVIV (JTA)—The budget
chief of Israel's defense ministry

disclosed Monday that the coun-
try was spending S2.000,000 a day,
seven days a week, for defense
needs. Gen. Jacob Hefetz, in a
broadcast over the army radio net-
work, also disclosed that Israeli
gunners fired $1,700.000 in shells
in four days of artillery duels with
Egyptian forces across the Suez
Canal two weeks ago.
Gen. Hefetz said the bulk of the
defense budget this year will go
to the air force to pay for 50 Phan-
tom jet fighter-bombers, Skyhawk
jets and Hawk missiles, all pur-
chased from the United States.
But, he added, large sums would
also be allocated to the navy,
artillery and other military
branches. According to Gen. He-
fetz, Israel's defense budget this

year is two-and-a-half times
greater than that of the year pre-
ceding the Six-Day War.
