LECTRAS WILDCATS MORRIS BUICK 14500 W. 7 MILE DETROIT - 342-7100 This map appears in 'if Israel Lost the War" as an indication; of what could happen if the Arabs had a free hand in the Middle East, with the inevitable result described by the authors that there would be a total devastation. Woe unto Israel and Israelis if the war had been won by the Arabs! Three Newsweek associate editors who studied conditions at first hand during the Six-Day War paint a gruesome picture of what could have happened, what would happen if Israel lost. In "If Israel Lost the War," published by Coward McCann (200 Madison, NY16), the three writers describe events, point to personal- ities involved in Israel's govern- ment affairs and those who actu- ally played important roles in 1967 at the United Nations, in the capi- tals of the major powers, as well as the chief commanders and political leaders in the Arab coun- tries. The basic happenings are re- Viewed here, except that the auth- Ors deal with the negatives, with What might have happened, with what could have occurred had the Arabs struck first and then there would have begun the wholesale massacre. Thus we have a picture of dev- astation, rape, murder, orgies re- sulting from passionate resort to tyranny stemming from a triumph by those who had been deprived of their licentiousness by an Israeli triumph. The accompanying map repro- duced from the book by the three authors—Richard Z. Chesnoff, Ed- ward Klein and Robert Littell- provides details of what the auth- ors have in view and how they judge the possibilities of a whole- sale massacre if Israel were to be conquered. Their descriptions — of what might have happened, of the ter- ror that would sink into the hearts of Israelis and their leaders, of the assassinations, murders, cruelties. at the hands of conquerors — are fantastic. They serve to frighten at a time when Israelis are confident; they are gruesome and gloomy, Israel's experiences contradict the prognostications. But it is interesting that the authors, after the terror they point to, end with a note of faith with the afflicted turning to con- fidence inspired by this admoni- tion in Deuteronomy: "When thou goest into battle against thine enemies and seest horses and chariots and a people more than thou, be not afraid; for the Lord thy God is with Thee. Let not your hearts be faint, fear not, and do not tremble." • ••••••••••••••••••••••• • • NOT BY CHANCE - • • • • A prologue that reviews the • events that preceded the Tune 5, BY • • • 1967, occurrences points to the in- : CHOICE!
