Lebanese Government to Welcome
• Tourists--on Way Back From Israel

If the American Jewish Congress
wants to visit Lebanon, it's all
right with Beirut, the consul gen-
eral of Lebanon insisted to The
Jewish News this week.
Following a story in the Detroit
News Monday that Lebanon has
lifted its ban on travel by tourists
who have been in Israel, Souheil
Freijy told this paper that Syria
and Jordan also have adopted such
a policy. Because neither of the
latter countries has a consulate
here, the lifting of the ban was not
generally known, he said.
Until now, American tourists
were denied visas to Arab coun-
tries if they possessed Israel pass-
port visas. Israel. however, did not
discriminate against tourists com-
ing from Arab lands. -
For now, group travel primar-

ily will be affected by the lifting
of the ban, "but I'm hoping it
eventually will extend to individ-
ual travel," said Freijy.

The question that arose was
whether the consulate would limit
group travel visas to non-Jewish
groups. "Can the American Jewish
Congress visit Lebanon before
going on to Israel?" Freijy was
asked. "There has never been a
ban on any Jew," he replied. "I
myself have issued visas to Jews."
He said the Jordanian policy would
be "undoubtedly" the same, but he
could not speak for Syria, which
has no diplomatic relations with
the United States.
Freijy made no formal announce-
ment of the lifting of the ban, but
told "a friend of mine who works
at the News" about the new Beirut
policy, he said.
The consul general conceded that
Lebanese tourism has been seri-
ously hurt by the one-way policy,
