GEORGE W. COMBS, manager
of the HACK SHOE CO. down-
town store, was honored for his 25
Years of service at a dinner cele-
brating the 53rd anniversary of the
firm. One of the special guests was
Alfred T. Amluxen who retired 12
years ago, after 28 years with that
organization. Founded in 1916 by
Nathan and Pauline Hack, the
company, specializing in prescrip-
tion shoes, is now headed by Mor-
ton and Leonard Hack, their sons.
Three third generation Hacks 2 , re
helping to guide it. These are
James Hack, Morton's son, and his
cousins, Lawrence and Robert. The
firm has four stores and an asso-
ciated company, Hack and Sons

Inc.

HAROLD BINDER, long asso-
ciated with Detroit's leading archi-
tectural firms, has joined the firm
of Eberle M. Smith Associates,
Inc., architects and engineers,
Lyndon Welch, president, an-
nounced.

TOWERING MAIL
The Detroit Post Office handles,
on the average, 7,500,000 pieces of
mail a day. The letters alone, if
stacked one on top of another,
would form a tower of mail 311/2
times the height of the Penobscot
Building.

Charles Perlman, chairman of
the seventh annual Probus Club
Award committee, announced that
Dr. James M. Jay and Robert
Broner have been named winners
of the award for academic
achievement at Wayne State Uni-
versity.
Dr. Jay, associate professor of
biology at WSU, and Broner, asso-
ciate professor in the department
of humanistic st u d i e s, were
awarded a $500 grant each, with-
out restrictions, and received in-
dividual plaques.
Criteria for their selection in-
cluded their academic and pro-
fessional background and excep-
tional scholastic and research
work. Jay lives at 4205 Fullerton.
Broner, 18224 Parkside, teaches
art at the Jewish Center and is
married to writer Esther Broner,
also on the WSU faculty. He is
the son-of-law of Mr. and Mrs.
Paul Masserman of Coolidge
Hwy., Oak Park.
The Probus Club is a service or-
ganization composed of Jewish
business and professional men.
President is Irving Kramer.

Julius Goldman Cited
as Top Prep Official
by Catholic Coaches

Julius Goldman, veteran Catho-
lic league and basketball arbiter,
was honored as Official of the
Year for 1968 by the Detroit Catho-
lic Coaches Association at a lunch-
eon last weekend.
Goldman was cited along with
Al Baumgart, Football Coach of
the Year, and Marty Foley, Bas-
ketball Coach of the Year.
Some 700 prep coaches from the
metropolitan and state area were
present at the awards ceremonies.
Goldman is recognized as one of
the top prep officials in Michigan.
He started officiating in 1933 and
has been handling Catholic sports
events since 1935.
A graduate of Windsor Tech
in 1927, Goldman received his
bachelors degree in electrical en-
gineering at Detroit Tech in 1932
and his masters in business en-
gineering from the same school
in 1937.
He teaches night school at Tech
as well as at Wayne State Univer-
sity. He is employed by a major
engineering company.
An all-A student in high school
and college, Goldman participated
in four sports at Detroit Tech,
winning five letters in basketball,
four in football, two in baseball
and three in track.
He was a member of the Ford
of Canada basketball team which
captured the Canadian champion-
ship in 1936 and represented Can-
ada in the Olympics in 1936. Gold-
man was unable to play because
he was not a Canadian citizen, so
he took over the coaching reins.
The team was runner-up to the
United States.
Goldman was born in Mayes-
ville, S.C., and reared in Edmon-
ton, Alta., and Windsor.

U.S. HOLDS RECORD

The United States holds the Mac-
cabia Games records in 16 of the
23 men's track and field events on
the program. South Africa, Britain
and Israel each hold two. France
has one. However, the USA doesn't
hold a single women's mark.
