London Jewish Chronicle Apologizes
for ACcusing MP of Anti-Semitism

LONDON—The Jewish Chronicle,
defendant in a libel action brought
by a member of Parliament, pub-
licly apologized for wrongfully ac-
cusing the MP of anti-Semitism,
and the charge has been dropped,
it was reported by the Chronicle.
Labor Party MP Christopher
Mayhew, a former minister for the
navy, had charged that last July
the Chronicle printed an article by
another member of Parliament,
Maurice Edelman, which suggest-
ed that criticisms of Israel and
certain aspects of Zionism made
by Mayhew on a televiSion pro-
gram, indicated that he was anti-
Semitic,
Edelman also apologized to
Mayhew, concurring with the
Chronicle that Mayhew is "a Per-
son of liberal opinions, an enemy
of intolerance and a man who
has on many occasions maxi-

fested friendship to the Jews."
It was noted by the plaintiff's
attorney that while Mayhew has
sympathized with the Arab "mis-
fortune in Palestine," "he has
visited Israel on several occasions,
where be has been the guest of the
chief rabbi in Jerusalem and of the
prime minister and foreign secre-
tary."
The statement also said that
prior to World Wat II, he support-
ed British Jewry against fascism,
and helped settle victims of
Nazism after the war. Mayhew
also had been praised by British
Jews for making a television film
about Judaism and assisted Jews
in his constituency in acquiring a
site for a new synagogue.
