Sponsored on behalf of State of
Israel Bonds, resulting in 5210.000
Bond sales, the event, conducted
by three Bnai Brith lodges—Kei-

—the event was utilized by the
toastmaster, Judge Lawrence Gu-
bow, and the honoree to pay tri-
bute to the memory of the late
President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The audience stood in silent tri-
bute, and Gen. Marshall, prior to
acknowledging receipt of the Israel
award, recalled the years during
which he worked closely with Gen.
Eisenhower and assisted in record-
ing the historical events of the
men for the three Bnai Brith
lodges that sponsored the dinner,
Martin Budman, Harold Jaffa and
Bernard Whiteman, and by the
chairman of the Bnai Brith Israel
Bond committee, Felix Rosen-

Marshall took occasion to re-
call a conversation he had with
the then Israel Prime Minister
David Ben-Garton after the Sinai
Campaign in which the Israeli
leader spoke glowingly of the
humanitarianism of the late
President. Marshall spoke of the
great loss as being "a personal
loss."
Outlining the needs of Israel as
being greater than ever now, Mar-
shall urged Israel Bond buying as
a "continuing commitment" in
order to help assure Israel's eco-
nomic security and thereby to
keep the world fit for decency and
human kindness," and gave the
assurance: "I am with you all the
way."
"Israel knows what she is doing."
Marshall stated, criticizing the at-
titudes expressed at the UN.
"There is no ambiguity in Israel's
policies." He pointed out that Isra-
elis are not running away from
trouble, that "every Israeli knows
his past and knows where he has
been"—implying that the survivors
from Nazism will not permit repe-
tition of the tragedies of the past.
Expressing his confidence in Is-
rael, he said that Mrs. Marshall
and his daughters are planning
visits in Israel and that they will
fly by El Al.
"Arab guerrillas and gangsters
do not scare them," he said.
The principal address at the din-
ner was delivered by Brig. Gen.

JERUSALEM—Monday's earth-
quake that shook the Middle East
was the strongest recorded in the
area in the past 50 years, the head
of the development ministry's seis-
mological station said Tuesday.
There was, however, no damage
in Israel from the tremor which
seismologists said was centered in
an unpopulated area near the Red
Sea.
The earthquake rattled windows
and shook tall buildings in several
parts of Israel sending some resi-
dents into civil defense shelters.
The tremors coincided with a
heavy sandstorm that blew in
from Egypt and covered the en-
tire country with a fine coat of
dust that reduced visibility. Warn-
ings were issued to aircraft.
The earthquake shocks were felt
in the Beisan Valley, in Tel Aviv
and Jerusalem and were most
severe in the southern part of the
country.
Seismographs here recorded a
force of'seven on a scale that goes
has high as 12. Disastrous quakes
at Skopit, Yugoslavia, and Agadir,
Morocco, in past years registered
5.5 on the scale but they struck
heavily populated areas resulting
in many casualties.

In his address, Gen. Weinstein
emphasized that Israel Bond
money goes for humanitarian
purposes and are not used for
Israel's military purposes.

NEW YORK — Israel Zim Lines
has announced that it is doubling
the number of ships plying the
route between Eilat, East Africa
and Australia. This brings the
total number of vessels on the
route to eight.
Four 10,000 ton vessels will
supplement the four veesels now
sailing this route.
The first of these additional
ships—the M.V. Tiberias—has al-
ready departed on its first trip to
Australia. It is to be joined short-
ly by the M.V. Beersheba. Two
more ships will be added later
this year.
Until now these freighters were
part of Zim's Pacific Star line, be-
tween Japan and U.S. West Coast
ports. On this run they are being
replaced temporarily by chartered
vessels, until a decision is, taken
by the company on the future of
this service.
