King HAIFA (JTA) — Abba Khoushi, mayor of Haifa for the past 18 years, died at Rothschild Hospital here early Monday at age 71. Mr. Khoushi was hospitalized a week ago for what was diagnosed as a slight heart attack. One of Israel's most colorful and most formidable political figures. He was elected to the first Knesset on the Mapai ticket in 1949 and served until 1951 when he was elected Haifa's mayor. Mr. Khoushi was a member of the executive committee of His- tadrut, Israel's labor federation, and of the council of Mapai. He was active in the Hagana, Jew- ish Palestine's defense force of pre-statehood days, and had to seek refuge with a Druze fam- ily on Mount Carmel when he Dr. Gerstmann, 81; Was Neurologist NEW YORK — Dr. Josef Gerst- mann, noted neurologist and psy- chiatrist, died Sunday at age 81. He was the author of more than 100 papers on neuropsychiatry. A brain disorder that causes right-left disorientation was de- scribed by Dr. Gerstmann, for whom the syndrome was named. A graduate of the University of Vienna and one-time assistant of Nobel Prize winner Dr. Julius Wagner von Jauregg, Dr. Gerst- mann was in charge of a hospital for nervous and mental diseases on the Italian Front during World War I. He later became director of the Hospital for Mental and Nervous Diseases in Vienna and professor at the University of Vienna. Forced to leave his native Aus- tria following the Anschluss, Dr. Gerstmann came to the United States, where he filled a number of important research positions. BERLIN—Ernst Deutsch, inter- nationally known German Jewish actor from the Max Reinhardt the- atrical era who made a comeback after World War H, died last Sat- urday at age 78. Mr. Deutsch was well known among the younger German gen- eration of theatergoers with his impersonations of Shylock from Shakespeare's "Merchant of Yen- ice" and "Nathan the Wise" from the play of the same name by Lessing. He also was recognized outside Germany and in Israel. Born in Czechoslovakia, Mr. Deutsch began his theatrical Ca- reer in Vienna but soon moved to Berlin and became leading man in Reinhardt's Dentsches Theater. He played in both classic and modern works—from Shakespeare to Ibsen. He left Germany because of Nazi persecution in 1933 and found his way to the United States. Mr. Deutsch acted in Hollywood and on Broadway, returning to Ger- many after World War H. He said he had to go back because he could not speak English well. But Mr. Deutsch's return was ac- claimed by German audiences. who arose at his appearance op stage. He worked with several German theater companies, and was last in the United States on tour in March 1968. Among his roles was that of Kurtz in Carol Reed's classic 1930 movie, "The Third Man." Sociologist Dr. Weinberg; Ex-U. of M. Professor TORONTO — Dr. Ian Weinberg. associate professor of sociology at the University of Toronto, died March 12 at age 31. Before joining the university, he was an assistant professor of sociology at the Uni- versity of Michigan. Born in London, Dr. Weinberg was graduated with honors from Oxford University, and at Prince- ton University, he was an Ogden Porter Jacobus fellow, receiving a PhD degree in 1964. He edited two sociology quarterlies and authored a book on the English public schools. 56—ANTIQUES Dr. Israel Yagupski A- ntiques BUENOS AIRES (ZINS) — Dr. Israel Yagupski, vice president of the Latin American Confederation of General Zionists, died here after a short illness. Dr. Yagupski was one of the most prominent Zionist leaders of the Jewish community in Latin America. He was a pioneer of Hebrew education in Latin America, as well as a prominent longtime Zionist leader.
