THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS OUR JEWISH - COMMUNITY IS STRONG JEWS NEED OUR HELP! by Hyman Safran, President Jewish Welfare Federation by Maxwell Jospey, Chairman Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund In Detroit we have been blessed by men and women who had the foresight in past years to establish institutions which would serve the future generations:--and we are one In the comfort of our homes with our basic needs of food and clothing fulfilled, it is often difficult to remember that there are hundreds of thousands of Jews who are not able to secure these things for themselves. of the future generations. They set up or- ganizations which would take care of the aged, serve the sick, provide Jewish education, pro- mote recreational and cultural programs, aid the troubled, the immigrant, the handicapped. Then they related all their services to one central voluntary organization. To these people we owe a debt of grati- tude foi our present Jewish community- organized, strong, living with dignity. Because we have at- tained security we are able to help those who need our help, whether it be here in Detroit or in Israel or in the many other countries where Jews remain in op- pression • and poverty. We have a heritage which we must fulfill. We must not disappoint the gen- erations who built before us. We must carry our responsibility to the best of our ability, first through our generous contributions to the 1969 Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel Emer- gency Fund, and then by serving as volunteers on the boards and in the programs which have brought us to a way of life which means opportunity for fulfillment and happiness for all. Friday, March 28, 1969-37 JEWISH COMMUNITY. RESPECTS TRADITION - RESPONDS TO CHANGE! by William Avrunin, Executive Vice-President Jewish Welfare Federation . These are the people who live in lands of oppres- sion. The aged and sick in Poland, the poor and de- nied in Roumania who look to the regular distribution of food bought with your money to sustain life. These are the emigrants from Arab lands who have gone to France, to Italy to escape persecution and degradation. There are those who arrive in Israel with their wordly possessions in a cardboard box who must be housed, fed and helped to get a job and start a whole new way of life. There are the children in many lands who cry for an education, the deaf, the blind and the otherwise deprived and helpless. Our world changes rapidly. So do our problems and our ways of solving these prob- lems, be they personal or social. Today we see the changes in our city, the shifting of our Jewish population, the in- creasing number of aged, and the new chal- lenges presented by our youth. We struggle to give our communal programs• meaning which will meet the demands of our time. We must continually build with creativity and imagination on the solid basis of the institu- tions which have endured the test of so many years. Change is not new but continuous. Our Jewish community would never have been built if its pio- neers had refused to rec- ognize the changing needs of society in their time. We continue, as they did, to stand for a way of life which respects the dig- nity of man, the importance of the family, the kinship of the Jewish com- munity, and of mankind. We strive to strengthen and enrich Jewish life in America. We extend our hand to the people of Israel to help them keep their commitment to these same humanitarian objectives at the very And, need is not all in foreign lands.
