Eban, Accepting Honorary Doctorate,
Looks Toward Mid East Independence

NEW YORK — Israel's foreign
minister, Abba Eban, predicted
here Sunday that the 1970s will
bring "an era of autonomy in the
Middle East."
Eban, who was awarded a doc-
tor of Hebrew letters by the Jew-
ish Theological Seminary at a spe-
cial convocation, said "For the
first time in modern history, its
(the Middle East's) destinies will
be controlled by its own people
and its own governments.
"The war of 1967 shattered the
illusion of externality both the
Arab nationalist illusion that Is-
rael hag ao place in the area, and
the world illusion that the region
can be controlled by outside
powers," said Eban.
The presentation made by Dr.
Louis Finkelstein, chancellor of
the seminary, said that Eban has
"placed all Jewry, and indeed all
civilization, in your debt through

Mrs. Paul (Eve) Liebert of
Grand Rapids has been elected to
a three-year term as secretary of
Bnai Brith's national vocational
guidance program, which provides
college and career counseling to
some 40,000 youths annually
through 20 regional offices.
Mrs. Liebert, 2271 Academy
N.E., is a member of Bnai Brith
Women's national executive board,
a past president of BBW's Mid
western district and a former na-
tional commissioner of Bnai
Brith's adult Jewish education
program.
Locally, she has served on the
executive board of the Kent
County Mental Health Association,
advisory committee of the Kala-
mazoo State Hospital and the
Mayor's Committee on Open
Housing.

"The fact," Eban continued, "is
that the Middle East has lost its
strategic importance—and happy
is the nation that has lost its stra-
tegic importance in this world. No
longer is Israel a crossroad — the
Middle East is not on the way to
anywhere. No longer is it merely
an oilfield. The concept of outly-
ing bases is anachronistic in this
era of vanished empires."
"Israel's cause can only be pre-
sented in terms of universal Jew-
ish humanism," said Eban, assert-
ing that "History has taught us
that there are no possibilities for
our extinction that are too ex-
treme. This is the point of refer-
ence for everything we do and
everything we say. If you under-
stand our memories, you under-
stand our policy — Never, never,
never to return to - the position of
political vulnerability from which
we so narrowly escaped two years
ago. It is time to be satisfied with
nothing less than peace."
He added: "There is a time in
a people's history when it is more
important to be alive than to be
popular. First we will ensure our
survival, and then we will win
worldwide approval for our acts."
