Jews Are Among Defendants in Russ 'Economic Crime' Trial LONDON (JTA)—A number of ' defendants in an "economic crime" trial held recently in the Soviet Union, some of whom have been sentenced to death, appear to be Jews, it was reported here this week from Moscow. The Soviet Law Journal reported that a 14-member ring of embez- zlers that stole goods from the state worth more than S1.500,000 has been convicted. According to the Journal, the trial lasted eight months and con- cluded in December, but the Soviet press, observers said, did not re- port it. Some two hundred persons were called to testify as witnesses. The Journal said the ring oper- ated for about a dozen years and was headed by Alexander Heifitz. It said that by bribing the direc- tors of several ladies' wear stores, the ring sold stolen goods to Mos- cow department stores. In October 1964, a similar trial was held in- volving defendants named Roifman and Shakerman—both Jews—and most of the 21 defendants were sentenced to death. Arab Women Stage Mosque Sit-In I JERUSALEM (JTA) — Thirty Arab women began a sit-in strike in a Nablus mosque Monday to pro- test recent arrests by Israeli occu- pation authorities and the demoli- tion of house belonging to suspected terrorists. Israeli sappers demolished sev- eral houses in East Jerusalem which belonged to suspected mem- bers of the popular Front for' the Liberation of Palestine. Several of the buildings were used as wea- pons training sites authorities said. A high-ranking Israeli senior staff officer suggested that the series of ' heavy artillery duels initiated by Egypt along the Suez Canal demarcation line stemmed from a calculated policy dictated by international ex- ternal pressures and by Egyptian hopes of gaining political advan- tages in any Big Four discus- sions on the Middle East con- flict. Acting Premier Yigal Allon warned Egypt to end its "aggres- sion" on the Suez Canal or that Israel would use measures like those "already employed and some hitherto unused." United Nations observers confirmed rael's complaint that in all in- stances of action this week, Egypt had started the shooting. Allon said that if the Egyptians had decided to disrupt Israeli fortifica- tion work "they missed their chance because we are well forti- fied" and efforts to dislodge Is- raeli forces would fail.
