A Jewish mayoral candidate
was startled last week by the
intense preoccupation of some
Jews with manifestations of anti-
Semitism which causes them to
view the prospect of a Jewish
mayor of New York City with
alarm. Rep. James H. Scheuer,
a Democrat who declared his
candidacy for mayor last year,
was warned that he would lose
votes in the Jewish community
because of fear that the election
of a Jewish mayor would in-
crease anti-Semitism in the city.

The warning was voiced by a
youtg male student who was part
of the audience addressed by Rep.
Scheuer at Stern College, the
women's division of Yeshiva Uni-
versity. Scheuer said he was
"shocked at the suggestion" when

An Orthodox rabbinical leader
charged Sunday that Negro clergy-
men have a "highly significant"
role in the inception and spread
of black anti-Semitism. either by
failing to discourage it or by origin-
ating it and serving as a "core of
racial antagonism."
The charge was made by Rabbi
Jacob J. Hecht, executive vice
president of the National Com-
mittee for the Furtherance of Jew-
ish Education. He asserted that
"These clergymen are not basi-
cally anti-Semitic but rather see
anti-Semitism as a vehicle for
solidifying and increasing their sup-
port among their own people."
Arguing that most Negroes
sought only to better themselves
and their families, he added that
"No group, however tolerant, can
resist a constant bombardment of
hateful attacks." He added that
when those "in the group see no
decisive stand being made against
these attacks by its clergy. it can-
not help becoming aroused.
In Toronto, a leader of the

and affirmed that "black people
have no justification for the sense-
