Star Spangled Governor: Tributes
to Governor Mandel, Rabbi Goldman

By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER ;

Baltimore boasts one of the fin-1
est Jewish communities in Amer-
ica.
Long ago Baltimore had Rabbi
Benjamin Szold whose daughter
created Hadassah. The Zionist. Or-
ganization of America was founded
by, among others, Baltimoreans.
The late Rabbi Edward Israel was
a noted resident of the city where
the national anthem was born.
The present crop of Baltimore
rabbis cconstitutes one of the most
splendid group of clergymen any-
where.
Indeed, Baltimore is famed for
its Park Heights Boulevard. with a
galaxy of synagogues so plentiful
and beautiful that the street is
known as "Rue de La Payess."
So it is fitting that Maryland
should have a Jewish governor,
Marvin Mandel.
The man who was elevated to

succeed Spiro Agnew is a stal-
wart Jew. A leader of the Jew-
ish War Veterans. he proudly
Con-
claims the
gregation as his spiritual home
and recently told the members
who came to greet him of a Fri-
day night that he rejoiced in

rhiziac

his Yiddishkeit. Gov . Mandel is
not only a Zionist, but a lectur-
er in behalf of the United Jew-
ish Appeal and Bonds for Israel.
Rabbi Israel Goldman, the gov-
ernor's spiritual leader, has a
unique claim to fame in addition
to his many other distinctions.
Rabbi Goldman is the only rabbi
in . the United States who has
ministered to two Jewish gov-
ernors. Once with T e ri, p I e
Emanu-El of Providence, R.I.
(now led by Rabbi Eli Bohuen)
Rabbi Goldman served Judge
Frank Licht and his family.
Judge Licht is now governor of
Rhode Island.

RETAIN...JUDGE MARVIN

FRANKEL

In a fascinating statement to his
people, Rabbi Goldman pointed
out that Maryland has gone a long
way since the days when its con-
stitution barred Jews from holding
office. The man who spearheaded
the fight against this tabu was a
Scotsman, Thomas Kennedy. viho
agitated for years on behalf of his
"Jew Bill," finally getting it passed
in the 1820s.

And wen's° salute your rabbi.

Gestapo Founder

BONN (JTA)—A 65-year-old for-
mer SS major -general who was
one of the founders of the Gestapo,
the Nazi secret police, and four
other ex-SS officers who worked
under him have been arrested and
flown to West Berlin where war-
rants were .issued on suspicion of
responsibility for the murders of
11,083 Polish Jews and intellec-
tuals during World War II.
Dr. Werner Best, who lives in
the Rhur mining town of Muehl-
helm, where he works as a legal
adviser to a mining company, is
suspected of having organized
some of the special "task forces"
that carried out the systematic
liquidation of Jews and Polish in-
telligentsia after the Nazi invasion
of Poland in 1939, He is believed
to be one of the highest ranking
Nazis arrested since the Nurem-
berg. war crimes trials in 1947.

Dr. Best was governor of oc-
cupied Denmark from 1942 until
the end of the war and was
responsible for ordering the

mass deportation of Danish
Jews, a move that was largely
foiled by the Danish populace
who smuggled most of the Jew-
ish community to safety in Swe-
den.
He was sentenced to death by a
Danish court in 1946. but the sen-
tence was commuted to a limited
jail' tetm and he was later deport-
ed to West Germany.
Because he had been tried in ,
Denmark, he could not be retried
on the same charges in West Ger
many under the Allied-West Ger-
man agreement restoring German
sovereignty in 1955. Dr. Best, like
many other high ranking Nazis,
was thereby permitted to go free.
