NEW YORK (JTA)—Dr. Meyer Waxman, professor emeritus of Jewish literature at the Chicago Theological Seminary, died at age 84 in Miami Beach, where he was vacationing. Dr. Waxman made his home in Manhattan. He was born in Russia, came to the United States in 1901 and was educated at New York University; the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and Colum- bia University, where he received a doctorate. He was the author of 19 volumes and 300 articles on Jewish litera- ture including the five-volume "His- tory of Jewish Literature From the Close of the Bible to Our Own Times." In 1919, he founded the Teachers Institute of Mizrachi that became the Teachers Institute of Yeshiva University. William Levin, Pioneer in Jewish Settlement (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) ALLIANCE, N.Y.—William H. Levin, a member of one of the first all-Jewish farm settlements in the United States, died Tuesday at age 95. He was a member of a group known as the Am Olam (Hebrew for "Eternal People") movement founded by Jewish youth in Rus- sia after the 1881 maccacres. Their objective was emigration and they stressed agriculture, as a means of national Jewish regeneration. Mr. Levin was born in Kiev and fled with his family and other po- grom victims to the United States, aided by the Alliance Israelite Universelle. The 43 families ar- rived in South Jersey in 1882 and called their settlement Alliance. The community is now part of the town of Norma in Pittsgrove Town- ship. Katie Zamler, an avid sports- woman, died - Sunday of injuries sustained while she was riding a new horse ..t her husband Law- rence's stables, Ponderosa Riding Stables, Nine Mile and Haggerty Roads. She was 48. Her mother Mrs. Louis (Mollie) Goldberg, died Wednesday at age 77. Mrs. Zamler, a native Detroiter, resided at 32044 Olde Franklin, Farmington. She was an active golfer, swimmer, tennis player and skier. Surviving besides her husband are two sons, Ronald and Jeffrey; two daughters, Wendy and Audrey; her father, Louis Goldberg; and two brothers, Manny Stevens of California and Irving Stevens.
