BOBBY LAUREL By Danny Raskin I Inc.) HOLLYWOOD—Sidney J. Furie, a 36-year-old, Toronto-born Jewish boy, most recently completed his first Hollywood movie, "Petrocelli; Lawyer," filmed without advance press ilotice or trumped-up pub- licity. Hardly anyone at Paramount was aware that the young director had been at work at the studio's smaller lot and on location in Colorado Springs. "Petrocelli; Law- yer" is the fictionalized account of the Sam Sheppard murder case with the factual background sup- plied by criminal attorney F. Lee Bailey, who defended the Cleve- land osteopath accused of mur- dering his wife. Raymond Stross, who had made a name with the Stuart Whitman pic- ture, "The Mark," winner of the 1961 Samuel Goldwyn Award, in- Iroduced me to Sidney Furie after the latter had guided for him "The Leather Boys," a controversial story dealing with the sex relation- ship of two young cockneys, shot in semi-documentary fashion in the suburbs of London and Manchester. On the strength of "The Leather Boys," and even more, "The Ip- cress File," Furie was signed by Universal in Hollywood, where he directed a mediocre Western, "The Appaloosa," with Marlon Brando. He made another spy thriller, "The Naked Runner," with Frank Sinatra, for Warner Bros., the lat- ter partly on location in London and Copenhagen. The two films are noteworthy only for cinematic brilliance, not for story values. * * * Frederick Stafford, the Czech- born actor portraying the key role of the French protagonist in the motion picture ; "Topaz," from the best seller by Leon Uris, told about his contacts with King Hussein of Jordan whom he met many times during his trips through the Middle East. Stafford says that Hussein doesn't want any identification with Arab refugees but claims he has only the interest of his own coun- try at heart. Circumstances have driven him into a position he doesn't like. The little king is well aware that Russia is looking for a permanent outpost on the Mediter- ranean and is afraid that Egypt will become a Soviet satellite. This, according to Stafford, who was a world traveler and business executive before becoming an actor. * *. Julian Blaustein will produce for Universal, "No Tears," based on his own story, with Alan Sharp writing the screen play. Edward G. Robinson is starring in "Song of Norway," based on the stage musical dealing with the life of Edward Grieg. Sam Katzman is producing and Arthur Dreifuss directing, "Angel, Down We Go," with Jennifer Jones (Mrs. David Selznick) making her screen comeback. Jules Schermer produces and Daniel Mann directs, "A Dream of Kings," in which Sam Levene ioins Anthony Quinn and Irene Papas. Zero Mostel co-stars with Harry Belafonte in "The Angel Levine," currently before the cameras in New York with Jan Kadar of "Shop on Main Street" directing.
