Passover Prayer for Russian Jewry, Empty
Chair at Seder Urged in Two Proclamations

The "Matzo of Hope" statement,
symbolizing hope for the 3,000,000
Jews in the Soviet Union, is again
being distributed to thousands of
Jewish families with the request
that it be read at the Passover
seder.
"So that the Jews of the Soviet
Union may know that they have
not been forgotten," the Jewish
Community Council of Metropoli-
tan Detroit is cooperating in the
program sponsored by the Amer-

ican Jewish Conference on Soviet
Jewry, an association of 25 na-
tional Jewish organizations.
The statement to be read at the
seder follows:
"This is the matzo of hope.
"This matzo, which we set
aside as a symbol of hope for the
3,000,000 Jews of the Soviet
Union, reminds us of the in-
destructible link that exists be-
tween us.

Mayor John V. Lindsay of New York (center) discusses plans for
the establishment of Iraqi Martyrs Memorial Forest by Jewish Na-
tional Fund in Israel, with Herman L. Weisman (left) and Stanley
Nabi, forest co-chairman.

NEW YORK (JTA)—Mayor John V. Lindsay of New York will serve
as honorary national chairman for the Memorial Forest for Iraqi
Martyrs to be planted in Isarel by the Jewish National Fund. The mayor
accepted the appointment at a city hall conference with JNF leaders.
The forest, according to Herman L. Weisman, president, and Dr. Milton
Aron, executive vice president of JNF, will honor the memory of the
Iraqi Jews executed by the Baghdad regime and "will ensure that the
world will not soon forget the atrocities committed on these Iraqi Jews
in Iraq."
Lindsay declared that "the issues involved in the brutal extermina-
tion of these Iraqi Jews far transcend any political implications. This is
tragedy
for all humanity." Three New York businessmen, all natives
a
of Iraq, will serve as co-chairmen of the committee. They are Stanley
Nabi, Jacob Mukamal and Herbert Sornekh.

Reds Resisted in Efforts to Infuse
Anti-Semitism Among Czechs

•LONDON (JTA)—Hard-line pro- a
ponents of Communist orthodoxy in
Czechoslovakia are atte m p t i n g,
with Soviet encouragement, to in-
fuse the country with anti-Semitism
in the guise of anti-Zionism, a tac-
tic that has worked in Poland.
But they are meeting determined
resistance from Czech liberals and
intellectuals who are apparently
not cowed by the Soviet-led in-
vasion of their homeland last sum-
mer, according to reports reaching
here.
Anti-Semitism is frequently evid-
ent in the Soviet occupation news-
paper Zpravy and in clandestine
pamphlets believed circulated by
pro-Moscow elements.
(The Soviet news agency Tass
last week featured a summary of
an article in a Beirut newspaper
that accused leading Czech Jews of
conspiring to overthrow socialism
in Czechoslovakia in the interests
of Israel.)
The degree of Czech resistance
to this type of propaganda was
evident in ceremonies last week-
end at the 15th Century Pinkas
Synagogue in Prague where gov-
ernment leaders, Jews and non-
Jews officially honored the mem-
ory of 3,800 Czech Jews murder-
ed by the Nazis at Auschwitz 25
years ago.
Hitherto, the anniversary of the
death camp's liquidation on March
8, 1944 had' been officially ignored,
but this time Czech leaders went
out of their way to condemn anti-
Semitism of the Hitler and Stalin
eras.
The principal speaker, Petr
Colotka, president of the Czech
Parliament, recalled how Jewish
children had gone to their deaths

in the Auschwitz gas chambers
singing the Czech national anthem.
He declared that the best way to
prevent a new Auschwitz was by
passing laws guaranteeing demo-
cratic freedoms and rehabilitating
the victims of Stalinist injustice,
many of them Jews.
Earlier, Premier Stanislav Razl
of the Czech .Republic and Evzen
Erban, chairman of the National
Front and a member of the Com-
munist Party presidium, attended
the ceremonies.
The Prague newspaper Svobodne
Slovo, a leading daily, said on the
occasion that the memorial obser-
vances proved "that a new spirit
of democracy and humanism
reigns in our country and that in
this country with such profound
democratic traditions there is no
place for anti-Semitism."

NEW YORK — Tel Aviv Univer-
sity will name a new element in
its structure the Levi Eshkol Cen-
ter for Technological Sciences. Its
president Dr. George S. Wise an-
nounced Wednesday.
The center, which will open this
October, will be named for the late
premier, he said, because of "the
great interest he had shown in
higher education and technology in
Israel."
When completed, the center
will have a dozen buildings, he
said. Its first classes will be
taught in the existing university
structure. By 1974, it expects to
produce its first 'graduate in a—sci-
ence-oriented engineering program.
