$200,000,000 Bond Quota Adopted at Miami C9nferenee

More than 2,500 delegates en-
dorsed the adoption of a quota of

$200,000,000 for the Israel Bond
campaign throughout. the free
world.

The record-breaking $61,000,000
result of the initial Israel Bond sale
was announced by Samuel Roth-
berg, national campaign chairman,
who characterized it as "a lasting
tribute to Levi Eshkol" and as a
"demonstration of our solidarity
with the people of Israel in their
struggle for a just peace."
Rothlberg sounded the keynote

of the conference when he de-

clared that "the 1969 Israel Bond
campaign must be a resounding
demonstration of *clarity with
the people of Israel in their pe-
riod of mourning the death of
Prime Minister Eshkol and in the
midst of their most critical strug-
gle for a just peace."

An air of solemnity hung over

the conference, which was convert-
ed into the first nationwide me-
morial tribute to the late prime
minister of Israel on the part of
Jewish communal leaders from all
sections of the country.

Rabin declared that Israel is now
engaged in three struggles for
survival: The political struggle
for peace, the military struggle
for physical survival and the
struggle for national consolida-
tion through development.

Ambassador Rabin placed the
greatest stress on the role of de-
velopment and consolidation of the
economic and social structure of
Israel as a decisive factor in its
capacity to survive.
Louis H. Boyar, chairman of the
Israel Bond Board of Governors,
introduced Rabin.
Jacques Torczylier, president of
the Zionist Organization of Amer-
ica, declared it was important
that Israel's new cabinet should
continue to be a government of
national unity.
Shimon Alexandroni, Israel's eco-
nomic minister to the United States,
emphasized that Israel's mounting
expenditures for defense, equal to
20 per cent of its gross national
product, were depleting the coun-
try's foreign exchange reserves.
However, he also observed that its
economy was. now growing at a
rapid rate, having achieved an un-
precedented 14 per cent increase in

its gross national product the last
year. He also reported that Israel's
industrial production had risen by
a record sum of $570,000,000 last
year to reach a total of $2,857,000,-
000 out of a gross national product
of $3,900,000,000 in 1968.
The drive will be conducted under
the leadership of Abraham Fein-
berg; Dr. Schwartz, Rothberg,
Boyar, Ira Guilden, national
chairman; Jack D. Weiler, secre-
tary-treasurer; Lawrence G. Las-
key, chairman of the executive

committee; Morris, W. Berinstein,
national chairman for trustees;
Mrs. Jan Peerce, chairman of the
national women's division; and
-Julian B. Venezky, national chair-
man for regions.
Greetings from the Jewish com-
munity of Canada were presented

The sorrow of American Jewry
was expressed by Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz, vice president of the Is-
rael Bond Organization, who said:

"This is a solemn and dark day

in the life of the Jewish people.
Israel has lost its prime minister.
The Jewish people has lost a great
leader. We have lost a dear friend
who inspired and guided us in our
efforts to promote the building of
Israel."
Dr. Schwartz eulogized Levi Esh-
kol as a "great unifier" who recon-
