Head Start and other programs for the disadvantaged are involv- ing at least 73 Jewish community centers and YM and YWHAs in 61 cities, the survey reveals. In addi- tion to participating in Head Start programs, JCCs and YM and YW- HAs are conducting or participat- ing in tutoring and remedial read- ing programs for the disadvantag- ed and in child care centers, and training volunteers for participation in anti-poverty programs, and they have also included children from disadvantaged minority groups in Center day or resident camping programs, have provided Center building and camping facilities to other racial or ethnic groups and are offering work training oppor- tunities. Negroes are not the only dis- advantaged group served by Cen- ters and Ys, the findings dis- close, . although they are the major one. In the Northeast there is also concern for Puerto Ricans, and in the Far West, there is concern for Mexican- Americans and reservation In- dians. Centers are also reaching out more actively to identify the impoverished among Jews, most notably the aged. The vast majority of JCC and Y executives interviewed or question- ed believe that the involvement of their centers in appropriate activi- ties related to the urban crisis "is a valid expression of Jewish com- mitment and values."
