The veil was attached to a flowered headpiece secured by a bow under the chin. Gardenias, roses and Stephanotis comprised the bride's bouquet. Serving her sister as maid of honor was Robin Hauptman. Mrs. Jesse Arnold of Port Huron was matron of honor, and bridesmaids were Jo Ann Allen of Toronto and Barbara Roby. Dawn Allison Ar- nold was flower girl. Gary Zamler, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Another brother, Richard Zamler, served as usher, as did Steven Seigle, Robert Gunsburg and Preston Scott Stearn. 4The newlyweds are now residing in Oak Park. NCJW Initiates Domestic Training ALEXANDRIA, Va. (JTA) — A Jewish women's organization has stimulated creation of a federally- funded program in northern Vir- ginia to train Negro women from poverty areas to serve as well-paid skilled domestics. The Alexandria section of the • National Council of Jewish Women, which initiated the program, de- scribed it as being based on the premise that domestic work can be skilled, dignified, protected and de- cently paid. In its first six months, the section has reported, the program has al- ready made "a crucial difference in the lives of several dozen work- ing women." Joining with Church Women United, the National Council of Negro Women, the National Coun- cil of Catholic Women and the Urban League, the NCJW section helped to create SURGE, an ac- ronym for Services United for Re- sponsible and Gainful Employment. In this extensive study, which has been translated from the Ger- man by Hella Freud Bernays, Dr. Buhler examines the characteris- tics of mental health, explains the tests upon which tests are made , and in the numerous sample case studies provides answers as they are interpreted by the psychologist. She states: "Mental illness can be defined, but to define mental health is much more difficult. For a long while it was thought that health was simply the absence of sick- ness. It was finally recognized that mental health would have to be de- fined by means of its own positive signs." Drawing upon the findings of many noted psychologists and sc ientists, D . Buhler quotes from Marie Jahoda the following six characteristics: 1. The mentally healthy person has an a dequate attitude toward himself. He sees himself realistically the way he is; he can look at himself critically with- out losing self-esteem. 2. He is interested In his adequate internal development and self-realiza- tion. He wants to bring out his best potentialities. 3. He makes an effort to achieve internal unity or integration of his .strivings. He does not allow himself to be worried by strivings that are irre- concilable, but makes an attempt to solve his inner conflicts. 4. He is autonomous; he makes his own decisions and does not depend on other people. 5. He has an adequate perception of reality; he does not allow himself to be influenced by wishes and fears in his grasp of the external world. . 6. He is capable of coping with the circumstances of his life. This includes the capacity to love, adequacy in love, work and play, adequacy in interper- sonal relationships, the ability to han- dle the demands of given situations, the ability to adapt, and competence in solving problems. mitted to the Department of Labor, But there is a seventh character- which provided a $400,000 grant to istic introduced by Dr. Buhler- the Urban League to operate "the capacity of a healthy person SURGE for two years, starting last to look at his life in its continuity September. . . . But she also refers to a different type of study in "Beyond the Melt- ing Pot" by N. Glazer and D. P. Moynihan, stating: "In this fact-finding investiga- tion, several ethnic groups — the Negroes, Puerto Ricans, Jews, Ita- lians and Irish of New York City —are compared with respect to such items as their jobs, education, family life, politics, culture and ideology. The idea was to test the theory of America as the 'melting pot' in which groups of different national and racial origins, differ- I ent cultures and ideologies sup- posedly grow together into a unity. The authors' conclusion is that, contrary to this theory, the ethnic groups remain distinctly separate and that they represent 'new so- cial forms' within the whole of American society. While distinction of religion and race primarily form this pattern of American sub- nationalities, the American nation- ality as a whole is still fluid." It is evident that the study by Dr. Buhler is very thorough and embraces all aspects of the study of varying characteristics. Her "Psychology of Contemporary Liv- ing" is a notable work.
