the habit persisted in having the
rabbi stand directly in front of the
Ark, perhaps, as some say, as a
symbol that what he was doing was
explaining the Divine contents of
the scrolls that are housed in the
Ark. These sometimes claim that
the Ark, indeed, stands much taller
than the height of the rabbi and
thus "towers over him", and there-

respect on the part of the rabbi
in preaching with his back to the

Why do some congregations
hang the Ark curtain on the in-
side of the Ark (behind the Ark
doors) while others hang it on
the outside of the Ark, in front
of the doors?

There seems to be a difference of
opinion between the medieval
scholars on this subject (Tractate
Megilla 26b). Rabbi Solomon Bar
Issac (Rashi) claims that the Ark
curtain should be hung inside the
Ark while the Tosafot commentary
claims it should be hung outside
the Ark. The Oriental synagogues
(i.e. the Sephardic Jews) hang
the curtain inside the Ark while
the Occidental (Ashkenazic Jews)
synagogues hang the curtain out-
side the Ark. Some claim that this
difference reflects a difference of
opinion as to the function of the
Ark curtain. Those who claim it
should be hung inside the Ark may
be of the opinion that the Ark cur-
tain is not a protective screen but
rather a removable curtain used
either for a cover for the scroll
when it was laid on the table for
reading or a table cover on which
the scroll was placed for reading
on the table. Those who claim that
the curtain should be hung on the
outside claim that the function of
the curtain is to screen the Ark.
Others claim that this was a dif-
ference of opinion between Pales-
tinian and Babylonian scholars.
