Jewish Humor

Off Press in May
In "Encyclopedia of Jewish
Humor," to be published by Jona-
than David in May, Henry D.
Spalding, a Hollywood editor, will
deal with:
Shnorres, fightskates and cheap-
wads, shlemicis and shlimazls,
atheists, fibbers, dirty crooks,
marriage brokers, anti-Semites,
waiters, judges and lawyers, doc-
tors and patients, tot-rods, poli-
ticians, Yiddishe mamas, Yid-
dishe papas . . . .
Sometimes through tears, some-
times through laughter, sometimes
with a sigh, always jubilant, Spal-
ding allows 40 centuries of Jewry
to speak for itself in this volume.
In addition to the comedy and
satire presented in its 39 chapters,
this encyclopedia has its own very
definite character. Spalding's own
sense of humor pervades the vol-
ume from its table of contents
through its closing pages. Humor-
ously and informatively, his able
writing lets the Jewish joke grow.
For those whose knowledge of
w idiom is
the Jewish antiltl i ti2le
el
limited, this volt will provide a
learning experience. Those who
have a particular fondness for the
Yiddish expression will find Doro-
thy H. Rochmis' glossary a valu-
able, concise dictionary in its own
right, the publishers state.

In every generation there is a Haman who reminds
Jews everywhere of a continuing venom that was de-
stroyed in Persia of old, and in the many lands where
bigotry raised its ugly head. On Purim there is a reminder
of an ancient experience that has found repetition in
prejudice and hatred, only to meet with defiance from
the Eternal People. In the midst of dangers, the Purim
spirit predominates. Once again, the joy of the festival
beckons Jewry to retain faith. May the joy of the Purim
of 5729 once again give courage to the People Israel.

Houston Jews Urge Nixon : Honor Campaign Pledges
HOUSTON (JTA) — The Jewish
community of Houston has urged
President Richard M. Nixon to live
up to his election campaign pledges
to maintain Israel's military
strength at a level sufficient to
deter aggression and to forestall
any attempts by the Soviet Union
to impose a Middle East solution
that would be injurious to Israel.
The appeal was contained in a
series of resolutions adopted at an
interfaith public rally held at Tem-
ple Beth Israel which was address-
ed by Rabbi Arthur Lelyveld, pres-
ident of the American Jewish
Congress. He declared that Middle
East peace could be achieved only
through face-to-face negotiations
between Israel and her Arab neigh-
bors.

There are some people who prefer to put the
accent on the word "delicious" when they speak
of Heinz Vegetarian Beans. Others emphasize
"quick-to-fix", a very appropriate description of
this food of many purposes. But the name of the
product is Heinz Vegetarian Beans, the world's
most popular vegetarian beans—the only vege-
tarian beans that ever enter the kitchens of tens
of thousands of families. No matter where you
put the accent, serve Heinz Vegetarian
Beans soon. How about tonight?
