Eshkol of Israel died early Wednesday morn- ing after a heart attack at his official residence here where he had been recovering from an attack of influenza. A physician was summoned to his bedside shortly after 3 a.m. Jerusalem time (8 p.m. New York standard time) when he complained of chest pains. Death came at 8:15 a.m. (1:15 a.m. New York standard time) Mr. Eshkol was 73 years old and had suffered two previous heart attacks since 1965. Blessed be the Memory of the Righteous Zionist i L Li ev Eshkol: Levi Eshkol followed a tradition , Statesman , Scholar established in Israel and changed his name from Shkolnik to Eshkol. His adopted name means cluster of grapes. Figuratively, it tradition- ally denotes great scholarship. Thus, he combined several qualities: statesman, libertarian, scholar. World Jewry loses a great man in the death of Levi Eshkol. He had been minister of agriculture in the Israel government—a post he held because he had been a farmer in De- gania and was aware of his country's agricultural needs. He later assumed the post of minister of finance: his people's needs taught him to understand the obligations inherent in the treasurership of a new nation. Succeeding David Ben-Gurion to the premiership, he was called upon to face serious issues, and he met the challenges with great dignity. His career began with his role as a labor Zionist leader. He could not have risen to the highest official role in Israel without his background as a Jewish libertarian who participated in the redemption of the Jewish people, in ending Jewish homelessness, in pursuing the serious tasks of fulfilling the historic hope represented in Prophecy that "Zion shall be redeemed with justice." All Israel, world Jewry as a unit, mourns the passing of a great leader and scholar.
