Dayan Averts Split in Coalition With Berkman's 'Sabra' Characterizes Appeal to Gahal 8—Friday, February 21, 1969 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Heroes in June '67 War Ted Berkman will be remember- ed as the author of "Cast a Giant Shadow," the brilliantly told story of General Mickey Marcus, the American hero who assisted Is- rael's forces in the redemption of the New City of Jerusalem; a story that made such an excellent movie. Now Berkman presents us with a magnificent account of the civilian heroes of the Six-Day War, of the Israelis who were in the back- ground during that serious struggle but who, in their way, were part of the heroic era of state-saving. In "Sabra," published by Harper & Row, Berkman tells about the families of the men who were at TED BERKMAN Jewish-Lutheran Talks to Be Held in New York NEW YORK (JTA)—More than 30 Jewish and Lutheran scholars and theologians will meet here March 6 for the first theological consultation between the two faiths, it was announced by the American Jewish Committee and the Lutheran Council, joint spon- sors of the event. Co-chairman of the meeting will be Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum, direc- tor of inter-religious affairs of the AJCommittee, and the Rev. Dr. Paul D. Opsahl of the Lutheran Council. TEL AVIV (JTA)—An 11th hour appeal for national unity by De- fense Minister Moshe Dayan was credited with averting a split in the national coalition cabinet. But some of Gen. Dayan's Labor Party colleagues said it was un- seemly for Gen. Dayan to have intervened in the internal affairs of Gahal, the Herut-Liberal parties alignment. Gahal, second largest party in the government, voted 103-33 to stay in the coalition. The ballot- names of officers below top level. ing stemmed from dissatisfaction Nevertheless the tales be relates with a remark attributed to Prime are factual. In effect his book is Minister Levi Eshkol in a News- a tribute to the Sabra — to the week magazine interview that Is- the front as well as the courageous defenders of Israel, about "the bril- liance in leadership" and the "per- formance of the untried Orientals" who played so magnificent a role in Israel's behalf; about parents who were patient and were tested and their children who evidenced their determination in a period of crisis. In deference to Israel's army policy, Berkman uses only first native born Israeli—"not a vio- lent man . . . only his surface is prickly." His characterization is a deeply moving description of the element that fights for the right to live in a free Jewish society. Berkman's account of the person- alities who emerged in the June 1967 struggle are numerous—of the professor, the pilot, the nurse, the musician, the engineer. There is the moving story of Eliezer the Hasid, one about the mini-skirted first lieutenant. The root of the human episodes is unearthed in every narration about everyone of the characters who fuse in this volume into a people at war that strives for peace but battled for its right to fredeom and equality among men. The author worked under great difficulties, as a patient in three hospitals, having escaped death from land mines in Jerusalem and in the Golan Heights. He met his heroes in kibutz po- tato fields, on buses, in hospitals, in the embattled Sinai area. His tape recorder was in constant use. His rented Japanese sedan took him places. But it also brought him his troubles, his eye infection that required surgery, illnesses that handicapped but did not mar his distinctive work. His "Sabra" is an outstanding description of the courageous men and women on and off the battlefields who make up the Israeli population that has a determination to live. Crack Golani Brigade in Training rael did not wish to retain the heavily populated Arab centers of the West Bank. Gahal is opposed to withdrawal from the occupied territories. Gen. Dayan, in an unprecedent- ed appearance, urged alignment leaders to avert "a tremendous blow to Israel's capacity to face the grave challenges ahead." Menahem Begin, leader of the militant nationalistic Herut faction, said Gen. Dayan's appearance in- fluenced the vote. Sources close to Gen. Dayan said his plea was made as a cabinet member, not as a party member. Had Gahal left the government, the remaining coalition partners would have still commanded 106 seats in the 120- member Knesset. Gahal has 22 Knesset seats. Ex-Mayor Sees Trouble for Canadian Jews; Halifax Confrontation TORONTO (JTA)—Fears for the future of Canadian Jewry in the face of increasing disunity m the nation over the provincial separa- tist movement — particularly in Quebec—was voiced here by the former Jewish mayor of Toronto. Philip Givens, now a Liberal member of Parliament, told a Bnai Brith regional council meet- ing, "People tell us that we Jews are paranoid. We live in times reminiscent of the 1930s. The whole fabric of our country is at stake and seems to be coming apart at the seams. We Jews have learned by experience that when anything happens to disunity a country, we are the minority group that suffers first." Concern was voiced at the meeting over the growth of black anti-Semitism, particularly in the port city of Halifax where the Bnai Brith Anti-Defamation League was investigating black militant accusations that Jew- ish "slumlords" own most of the Negro ghettos. Allan Grossman, Ontario minis- ter of correctional services, agreed Amidst mounting tensions, this crack Golani Brigade is training for Israel's defense. "It may be that we are at the 11th hour now as Jews and as Canadians," he said, predicting that conditions would worsen be- fore improving. Arthur Harris, chairman of the event, expressed concern that Can- ada might import from the United States violent clashes between races and ethnic groups. "The per- centage of Negroes is higher in Halifax than it is in Omaha or Minneapolis," he said. The black accusation of Jewish slumlord-ship in Halifax had a "frigteningly fam- iliar ring," he said.
