Herschel, Sam Bernardi, to Be Sold

A special collection of Bernardi
brothers' sculptures has been add-
ed:to Cong. Shaarey Zedek's art
exhibit and sale to be held Sunday
at the synagogue.
The sculptures will be among the
the 242 paintings and sculptures on
diSPlay—ranging in value from $15
to $9,000, most of them the works
of Israeli artists. The show is being

Aviv in cooperation with the fine
arts committee of Shaarey Zedek's
Cultural commission.
The Bernardi brothers' folk
sculpture business began the night
that Broadway star Herschel Ber-
ttardi took over the leading role in
"Fiddler on the Roof." (Ile is now
playing- the leading role in "Zor-
ban. His brother, Sam, a sculpture
hobbyist, was overwhelmed by the
Memories stimulated by the music
life in Russia and the Yiddish
theater in which his parents toured.
Sam Bernardi decided to pur-
sue his bobby and was joined by
his other brother, Jack. They
have concentrated on sculpting
figures of the shtei— the little
Jewish vilage of old Russia and
Poland. Their sculpture reper-

induced Ingrid Bergman to return
to television and appear in Ibsen's

Susskind is a graduate of Har-
vard University and has received

from the Franklin Pierce College in
Rindge, N.H., and an honorary
degree in pedagogy from Rhode
Island College.

cert, Three Faiths in Jazz.
A number of the selections play-
ed at that concert now have been
put on record — an LP Action
Record — as an innovation in in-
terfaith relations.

are "Ahvat Olam" (Great Is Thy
Love for Us), "Kiddush" and "Let
Us Adore the Ever Living God"—
all three of which were presented

at Temple Israel in its first jazz
service, two years ago. Charles
Davidson is the composer.

Cantor Orbach describes the
music for "Ahavat Olam" as
"old-style blues" and the Kid-
dush as a "chant with contemp-
orary rhythm."

Since his arrival here, Cantor

Klein has trained and organized
the Bnai Moshe men's choir,
which regularly officiates during
the High Holy Days, a large
sisterhood choral group and a
junior choir. He blends their
voices in an annual music fes-
tival, which he produces and di-
rects.
