clared by President de Gaulle,
may in time also prove to be a
blessing for embattled Israel.
Israeli economists believe that
it would pay the state to pro-
duce her own war planes and
other weapons, not only because
she has been pushed against the
wall and has no other alterna-
tive, but because such an indus-
try would prove profitable to
the country.
The economists further reason
that Israel is spending enormous
sums of money in foreign coun-
tries for war planes and other
necessary weapons for her self-de-
fense. The purchase of military
equipment is responsible for half
of her deficit in foreign trade.
Such an industrial complex on Is-
raeli soil would expand her na-
tional income and increase the
earning power of her population.
The question is, however, wheth-
er Israel possesses the potential
to produce war planes as econom-
ically as she can obtain them else-
where. Is Israel technologically
equipped to build high-quality war
