Hebrew U. Scientist Does Malaria Research

JERUSALEM — Research de-
signed to discover_ which of the
antigens composing the malaria
parasite can stimulate an immuni-
zation action in an animal model
is now in its second year at the
Hebrew University-Hadassah Med-
ical School's department of para-
sitology.
Prof. Avivah Zuckerman, who is
working on this project, with the
help of a $19.570 grant from the
U.S. Department of Health, Edu-
cation and Welfare, the Public
Health Service and the National
Institutes of Health, explained re-
cently that modern methods of
protein analysis make it possible
to identify and isolate each of the
series of antigens of which the
malaria parasite is composed, but

scientists do not yet know which
of these antigens is responsible for
the immune effect.
Prof. Zuckerman points out that
malaria is stall one of the world's
most serious public health men-
aces, particularly in Centrat
Africa and the Far East. Globally,
it is responsible for about 1,000,000
deaths each year.
