El Fatah Fund Raisers a Flop WASHINGTON (JTA) — Two members of El Fatah, the Pales- tinian commando organization, are touring the United States and Can- ada in an effort to raise money from Arab-Americans aild sym- pathy for their cause among the general population, Washington Post correspondent George Lard- ner Jr. reported from Los Angeles. They are having scant success obtaining funds from sympathetic but generally tight-fisted Arab- Americans, most of whom are of Lebanese or Syrian descent, Lard- ner wrote. Arab-Americans are `Babi Yar' Manuscript in Jerusalem Library JERUSALEM (JTA) — The ori- ginal manuscript of the famed poem "Babi Yar" by Yevgeni Yevtushenko has been deposited for safe-keeping with the Jewish National and University Library here by the man who purchased it recently from a London gallery for $7,600. The poem described the murder of Russian Jews in the Babi Yar ravine in the Ukraine by the Nazis during World War II and protested the manner in which"their deaths were subsequently ignored and for- gotten by their fellow countrymen. The poem bought fame to its author when it was first published in a Soviet literary magazine in 1967. It will be put on public display shortly. In Memoriam I intensely anti-Israel but they are fragmented, some attracted to the far right and white racist organ- izations, others to the extreme left wing. Lardner described a recent, fund-raising meeting at the head.' quarters of the Lebanese-Syrian- American Society in Los Ange- les. It was addressed by two El Fatah emissaries, Akram Abdul Majeed and Yousef Hanafi, both Palestinians and both 28. Their audience consisted of doctors, students, priests and assorted businessmen. Their theme was that guerrilla warfare was the only way to wrest Palestine from the Israelis. Dona- tions were solicited by George E. Shibley, general counsel for the United American Arab Congress. "At length, between $400 and $500 is raised from an audience of some 75 of the Arabic community's big- gest spenders," Lardner reported. He said a "Night of Artists" sponsored by the United Arab American Congress last August to raise funds for Sirhan B. Sirhan, the Jordanian immigrant on trial for the assassination of Sen. Rob- ert F. Kennedy, raised only $1,500 toward its goal of $5,000. Lardner estimated the Arab- American population at about 1,000,000, the Syrians and Leban- ese being the old-timers with a sprinkling of Palestinians and Jor- danians who arrived since 1948. He noted that the Jewish popula- tion of New York City alone is more than twice the Arabs' num- bers. He said the Lebanese and Sy- rians, most of whom started out as peddlers and eventually built small businesses, are conservative by nature and tend to vote Repub- lican.
