Radiation Research Enters New Phase for 'Light Up Sk
Led by Young Prof at Hebrew U.

JERUSALEM — One of Israel's
most promising young physical
chemists, and one of the youngest
professors at the Hebrew Univer-
sity, hopes to probe deeply into the
radiation chemistry of water and
aqueous solutions.
With the aid of a new custom-
built linear accelerator, the first of
its type in Israel, he is expected to
put this country's contribution to
the field on the world map.
Gideon Czapski, 37, professor of
physical chemistry, directs the
U.S.-built Varian accelerator, which
represents au investment of over
$300,000, along with extensive ancil-

lary equipment and a special build-
ing in the big chemistry compound
on the Givat Ram campus. The
unit, which differs from others in
its general category in various
countries, began regular operation
in January.
Prof. Czapski came to Jerusalem
as an infant of 2 with his family,
fleeing Hitler's Berlin. When he was
18, he herded sheep at a Beisan
Valley kibutz, Hammadiya.
He took three successive chemis-
try degrees at the Hebrew Uni-
versity, the last one in 1959, a PhD
on reactions of atomic hydrogen, a
field he had meanwhile specialized
in very briefly at University Col-
lege, London. He went on to be-
come a post-doctoral fellow at
Brookhaven National Laboratory,
researching into the radiation chem-
istry of aqueous solutions, which
study he continues today. He gained
more experience internationally at
the Boris Kidrich Institute. Vinca,
Yugoslavia, at the Demokritus Nu-
clear Center, Greece, and again in
the U.S. at Argonne National La-
boratory.
The building he directs, and its
mass of equipment that serves
the linear accelerator, will keep
three technicians and up to a
dozen doctoral and post-doctoral
researchers busy. It contains,
apart from the actual accelerator
room and control panel chamber,
offices, and experimental area
and laboratories.

Czapski has hopes that his proj
ect will make a sizable leap for-
ward, once international_ scientific
institutions take formal cognizance
of its status. This, he feels, would
boost his work to world notice,
attract a steady flow of foreign
scientists who would cross-fertilize
ideas and perhaps draw special
budgets, which he is sure the proj-
ect will need to exploit the accler-
ator to the optimum.
