Israeli Mime Theater
to Do 'Men and Dreams'

Claude Kipnis speaks an interna-
tional language—pantomime.
Without uttering a word, he and
his mime theater group populate
the stage with "Men and Dreams,"
a show first performed in Israel
and now being offered in the De-
troit Institute of Arts Concert
Series, 8:30 p.m. Feb. 21. Tickets
are available at the Art Institute
ticket office (832-2730), Grinnell's
and J. L. Hudson ticket service.
A one-time student of Marcel
Marceau, Kipnis founded a school
of mime in Tel Aviv and organized

"Men and Dreams" was created in
1963. The next three years saw the
company tour Europe and con-
cluded with a successful nine-week
engagement in New York.
Kipnis became director in resi-
dence for the Boston Opera Com-
pany in 1966-67, where he staged
Schonberg's "Moses and Aaron;"
created, staged and performed

by the pantomime of Bartok's
"Miraculous Mandarin;" and ap-
peared on television's "Today"
show, NBC "Profile on the Arts"
and a special program created
for CBS "Encounter."

Most recently (1967-68) he has
been artist in residence at the Uni-
versity of Illinois and a fellow at
the University's Center for Ad-
vanced Study.
