Pacesetters Respond With Increases in Giving Following Rabin's Message

(Continued from Page 1)
The speakers emphasized that
Israel, has serious burdens to meet
the defense needs and that world
Jewry's task is to provide for the
educational, health and social serv-
ice requirements of newcomers to
the Jewish state.
Zuckerman announced that an-
other large mission to Israel will
commence on Feb. 16 and urged
Detroiters to participate in it.
Rabin told his audience that
"We don't ilve in the past, glory-
ing in Military triumphs, but live
in the present and are mainly
concerned with the future."
Israel's urgent desire for peace,
the ctristant emphasis on it, was
compared by the ambassador to
the rause of the Arabs even to

mention the word peace. He said
Arabs refuse to recognize Israel
but "want to destroy someone who
to them does not exist—this is one
of the illogical things about the
Middle East."
He assured the gathering that
Israel, having survived 21 years of
warfare, "can survive another 200
years or more without recognition."
He declared that "Peace can not
be achieved without affirming
Israel's existence." He emphasized
that peace must have three essen-
tials—explicit recognition of Israel,
reconciliation with Israel and open
boundaries.
"We are ready for peace, we are
ready for negotiations, under any
conditions, but if the -other side
does not wish peace we see no rea-
son for giving up even one inch of
ground now under our control," he
declared. "We speak of peace con-
stantly. If you hear of a single
Arab who mentions peace, please
let us know. I haven't heard one
such declaration."
Referring to the Soviet Union's

role, he said that the USSR has
not gained anything with its sup-
port of the Arabs, to the tune of
free weapons amounting to $2,-
000,000,000 to Arab states, ex-
cept "to fish in troubled waters."
Rabin said he was not optimis-
tic about achieving an early
Peace in the Middle East, "but
we have to face realities," he
added.

Naturally concerned about the
French embargo, he said "No dam-
age will be done to military status

for by Israel."

large number. He showed how
Israel provided assistance to re-
fugees and is willing to participate
in the total solution of the problem
while the wealthy Arab states
"have not contributed a single
penny to assist the Arab refu-
gees." Only the UN funds-80 per
cent of which is provided by the
U.S.—are aiding the sufferers, he
said.
"The fate of Jews was never in
their hands for 19 centuries, and
Israel has become a symbol of the
new destiny," he declared. "Let us
prove we can accept the challenge
history has bestowed upon us."

At the press conference preced-
ing the Pacesetters' meeting are
Maxwell Jospey (left) chairman of
the Allied Jewish Campaign-Israel
Emergency Fund and Ambassador
Itzhak Rabin.

He took occasion to emphasize
that Israel does not ask the United
States or any one else "to fight
our wars."
"We can defend ourselves if we
get better weapons," he declared.
Referring again to the Soviet
Union, he said, "it would be too
much to expect of us that we
should withstand threats from and
war with 80,000,000 Arabs and at
the same time fight 230,000,000
Russians."
Because of the picketing of the
meeting by some 70 Arab youths
in front of the Sheraton Cadillac,
Rabin provided an explanation of
how the refugee problem had
developed from some 600,000 who
fled from Israel to the present
