Zuckerman Reports on 'Operation
Israel,' Lauds People's Courage
Paul Zuckerman, who headed the
one-week "Operation Israel" tour
of 23 Detroiters, in a statement
commenting on the fact-finding
trip to observe Israel's continuing
crisis boasted that it was the most
successful of 150 UJA missions in
the past 11 years. All of the 161
mission participants pledged con-
tributions to the campaign, the
first time there has been 100 per
cent response. In addition, their
contributions were 45 per cent over
1968 and 22 per cent over 1967,
said Zuckerman.

until the Israelis win the peace,

rael's struggle for survival."
In an interview carried in the
Jerusalem Post, Zuckerman said
he is building a home in Caesa-
rea, where he hopes to get "away
from the turbulent business
life."
On this, his 15t11 visit to Israel,
Zuckerman voiced some good-
humored resentment of the coun-
try's notorious telephone system.
He demanded of the interviewer,
"How did you people ever win a
war if you can't make your tele-
phones work?"
Zuckerman had tried to call his
family here, and once almost made
it. But he got on a line with the
Hilton Hotel laundry department
and finally gave up.
He assured the Israeli people
that "American Jewry is solidly
behind Israel, as are many non-
Jews who have a 'traditional re-
spect for free peoples.' "
Zuckerman praised a "matured"
American Jewry. "They realize
more than ever before that what
is important to Israel is important
to all Jews, no matter where they
are," he said. "And they don't
have to apologize for their help.
They don't feel that they are com-
promising their traditions as
American Jews by helping Israel."
Swim instruction and free swim
time will be emphasized in sum-
mer programs planned for children
by the Jewish Center. A special
unit for very young children is
planned at the Ten Mile Branch.

week sessions and brochures with
