Peace Coin Explained

Director-Wyandotte Chemical. Corporation

NEW YORK — The director gen-
eral of the Israel Government
Coins and Medals and Corporation,
Jerusalem, released information
about the 1969 Independence Day
Commemorative Coin "Shalom," to
be issued by the Bank of Israel,
stating it is dedicated to the men
and women who, at the sacrifice
of their lives, safeguarded the uni-
versal right of men to live in free-
dom, in independence and in peace.
On the obverse of the coin ap-
pears the four letters of the He-
brew world "Shalom," of which
the first letter "Shin" is designed
in the form of a candelabrum,
three of its seven branches ap-
pearing on the right side.
On the reverse appears part of
the verse from Deuteronomy 34:6,
about the death of Moses: "And
no man knoweth his place of bur-
ial." The words are arranged in
the shape of a cairn, similar to
the "Gal-Ed", a heap of stones,
which Israel's soldiers raised be-
side the battlefields in memory of
their fallen comrades. Beside the
cairn are a-net-covered helmet and
ay olive sapling with its roots.
The U.S. federal mint in Den-
per has agreed to mint the greater
part of the yet uncirculated silver
coins. The remainder, earmarked
for local and will bear a special
mint mark, the Hebrew letter
"Kof."
