Israel's aircraft industry has adapted rapidly to make up for the loss of France as a source of spare parts, officials said. Production schedules have been agreed upon by defense officials and industry leaders. The latter are convinced that their plants can assume the added burdens without restricting production for export or slowing down the de- velopment of prototype commer- cial and military aircraft of Is- raeli design. Leaders of France's aircraft in- dustry said here Tuesday that they opposed Gen de Gaulle's embargo and indicated that the equipment needed by Israel could be obtained from sources other than France. Israeli officials were at Lydda Airport to greet Joseph Shidlovsky, head of the Turbomeca Co. of France, who officially opened Is- rael's first jet engine manufac- turing plant at Beth Shemesh, near Jerusalem Wednesday. He was accompanied by Bourges Monoury, former defense minister of France; Diomede Catroux, former minister of aviation; and president of the Franc e-Israel Association; and Marcel Ghassany, president of the Fr ench Aircraft Manufacturers Assocaition, whose company pro- duces the Matrax missile. The Beth Shemesh plant, an affiliate of Turbomeca, will start production of spare parts and will eventually produce complete jet en- gines. Shidlovsky, one of France's leading industrialists, said he did not believe de Gaulle would sell TEL AVIV (JTA)—Israel is well on the way to self-sufficiency in the production of arms. It is al- ready manufacturing spare parts for its French-built jets, will soon turn out complete engines, and will eventually build its own fighter planes of exclusively Is- raeli design, according to reports by Israeli military-industrial lead- ers last weekend. The disclosures of progress made by Israel's arms industry, hitherto veiled in secrecy, was seen as an attempt to allay public fears that the country might be left high and dry by France's em- bargo on military equipment and airplane spare parts to Israel. He added that "De Gaulle is certainly not mad enough to sell 50 Mirages to the Iraqis for nothing, and the Iraqis certainly will not pay." The French manufacturers said the de Gaulle embargo on military equipment and spare parts to Israel came as a sur- prise to all French circles, especially to friends of Israel of which there are many. They said they had no choice but to obey the orders of their government. They indicated, however, that THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, January 17, 1969-7 , Father's Footsteps Are Followed by Magnes The London Jewish Observer and Middle East Review carried this item in a recent issue: When the late Judah L. Shidlovsky hinted that some modifications may be introduced at the new Beth Shem- esh plant in view of the embargo. The Beth Shemesh works is Israel's largest aircraft parts manufacturer, employing 300 workers, some of whom have been trained in France. It plans to build engines for the French Fouga Magister jet trainer, British-made Handley-Page execu- tive aircraft and the Nord 262 transport. Another firm, Israel Aircraft In- dustries Ltd., is already assem- bling foreign-built aircraft and is developing the Arava, a locally de- signed Stol (short - take - off - and- landing jet) for civilian use that Israeli engineers plan to evolve into the first all-Israeli jet fighter plane. Itzhak Ironi, director-general of the defense ministry's military in- dustries department, said in a television interview that local in- dustries are also producing all types of guns and ammunition used by the air force which were im- ported from France until recently. He said military aircraft parts such as fuel tanks, bomb bays and rocket holders are all being manufactured locally as are tank guns and ammunition. According to Ironi, Israel's mili- tary-industries are producing more than the country's armed forces require, and the surplus is export- ed. "As a matter of fact," he noted, "France was one of our customers, and we have not yet declared a counter-embargo." Israel has long produced its own basic infantry weapon, the Uzzi submachinegun, which it has also become standard equipment in the armies of West Germany, the Netherlands and Iran. Grants to Technion to Finance Studies of Malaria Drugs, Metals A search for drugs to combat new virulent strains of malaria en- countered in tropical regions will be conducted by a scientist at the Technion—Israel Institute of Tech- nology. The U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command has awarded a $14,000 research con- tract to the Technion Research and Development Foundation to finance the work of Dr. Mordechai Rubin, associate professor in Technion's chemistry department. He is stu- dying the "Photochemistry of Anti- Malaria Drugs." In the first phase of the project, Dr. Rubin is examining the phys- ical properties and responses of the drugs. In the second stage, he will attempt to identify and analyze the phototoxic elements in the drugs. Meanwhile, development of a new physical method for metal- lurgic research is being carried out under a $20,000 research contract awarded to the Technion by the National Bureau of Standards of the U.S. Department of Commerce. Dr. Moshe Ron, lecturer in the Technion's physics department, is conducting the year-long study, en- titled "Mossbauer Spectroscopy Standards for Carbon Steels." PROUD—is the B. F.
