long part of the "clothing"

nesses, are unsightly, ungainly,
excessively burdensome for the pa-
tient—and hopefully, may soon be
on the way out.
Experiments to replace metal
braces with plastic have been con-
ducted by Dr. Gordon C. Robin of
the orthopedic department of the
Hadassah-Hebrew University Med-
ical Center, who reported on his
work at the international meeting
of the Israel Surgical Society held
here last month.
Plastic materials are often
cheaper, lighter and easier to work
and wear than metal. They resist
wetting and soiling, important in
orthopedic appliances, and are
more attractive than metal. Indus-
try here has also successfully re-
placed metal and laminated plas-
tics in the "Sussita" motorcar.
Despite advances in working
laminated plastics, no systematic
efforts have been made to deter-
mine their usefulness in orthopedic
appliances, prior to Dr. Robin's
research. Few attempts have ever
been made to design major plas-
tic appliances for the lower limb.
By using standard brace de-
signs and introducing minor
structural alterations to suit the
plastic material, Dr. Robin has
had considerable success with
the new plastic braces, made for
him by Israel Aeronautic Indus-
tries Ltd., for research.
A simple plastic double-upright,
below-knee brace has been in use
for three years. It is 40 per cent

Although its life is shorter than
a metal brace, it can be reproduc-
ed cheaply and rapidly from the
original mold.
Its success led to the use of the
same laminated polyester for a
knee stabilizing brace which was
90 per cent lighter than the stan-

Washington Officials See
`Some Good' in French Action
WASHINGTON (JTA) — High-
ranking officials of the Johnson
administration said this week that
French termination of shipment of
all military hardware and spare
parts to Israel might achieve the
"good result" of inhibiting Israel's
reprisal policy. While not approv-
ing the decision by President de
Gaulle, the officials said it might
serve a "constructive purpose" by
setting limits upon Israeli be-
havior.
The reported Soviet proposal for
a Mid East solution involving writ-
ten Arab renunciations of belliger-
ency drew mixed responses from
State Department officials.
Those skeptical of the sincerity
of the Russian "peace offensive"
pointed out that Moscow visual-
ized only the unilateral withdrawal
of Israeli forces without collateral
Arab peace commitments and
credible assurances of Israeli tran-
sit rights through the Suez Canal
and Gulf of Aqaba.
Soviet proposals do not indicate
that the Arabs are prepared to
enter into a meaningful and lasting
peace agreement, officials said.
Key aim of Moscow is the re-open-
ing of the Suez Canal for Soviet
munitions shipments to North Viet-
nam, they noted.

Dr. Robin is now experimenting

strain and improve appearance.
New light weight plastic spring
braces have resulted thus far.
