Congressman Seeks
Citizenship for Israeli
Killed in Vietnam

NEW YORK—Rep. Bertram L.
Podell (Dem., N.Y.) has introduc-
ed a bill to confer U.S. citizenship
posthumously to Spec. 4 Aaron
Tawil. Although a citizen of the
state of Israel, Tawil was serving
with the U.S. Army in Vietnam,
198th Infantry Brigade, when kill-
ed in action Nov. 17.
A letter from General Creighton
W. Abrams, commanding general
of U.S. Forces in Vietnam, to Rep.
Podell praised Tawil and said he
was recommended by his company
commander for the Bronze Star
Medal for meritorious service.
"This award was recently approv-
ed by the commanding general,
American Division, and the award
will be presented to his family in
the near future," wrote Abrams.
In addition, Specialist Tawil was
previously awarded the Combat
Infantryman Badge, National De-
fense Service Medal and Vietnam
Service Medal by our government
and the Vietnamese Campaign
Medal by the government of the
Republic of Vietnam.

Samuel, Van Doren Show Relevance
of Bible to Civil Disobedience Issue

Pursuing their method of dis-
cussing the Bible over radio, in
dialogue form, two noted authors
and scholars, Maurice Samuel and
Mark Van Doren, Tuesday night
shared with an audience of 800
their views on civil disobedience.
They appeared in the first of the
series of cultural programs spon-
sored by Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
The large hall was filled to capa-
city as the two men, remaining
seated, drew upon biblical sources
to develop their theme.
Smanel laid stress on the view
that people today do not recog-
nize the relevance of modern
times to the Bible and he as-
serted that "The Bible has rele-
vance to the question of civil
disobedience."
The two participants in the dia-
logue agreed that there is a lesson
to be derived from the Bible that

Israeli Method
of Analysis Slated
for Apollo Voyage

The March of Dimes reports

tal origin can be successfully

searcher at Israel's Weizmann In-

stitute of Science will be used to
probe for manifestations of life in
the material expected to be
brought back from the moon later
this year by American astronauts
aboard Apollo II.
The system, the work of Dr.
Emanuel Gil-Av and his team at
the Weizmann Institute's chemis-
try department, permits the detec-
tion of amino acids in trace quan-
tities and the simultaneous deter-
mination of optical activity in
these acids. This property, first
discovered in organic compounds
by Pasteur, is intimately linked
with the chemistry of living pro-
cesses, and, therefore, its detection
is of great significance in the
search for life in space.
Dr. Gil-Av recently returned
from the U.S., where he spent one
year on a NASA grant in the labo-
ratory of Prof. John Oro of the
department of biophysical sciences
at the University of Houston. The
purpose of his stay there was to
adapt the procedures he had devel-
oped in Rehovot to the special re-
quirements of analyzing lunar
samples. Meteorites and sediments
of Precambrian age served as
model substances on which the
sensitivity and reliability of the
method were tested.
In other news from Weizmann
Institute:
Scientists have discovered that
up to 15 per cent of tumor cells
can revert to the condition of
normal cells insofar as most of
their characteristics are con-
cerned. Once it is known exactly
how this reversion occurs, the
way may be open to artificially
stepping up this process.
Another U.S. science-based in-
dustry, Mennen-Greatbatch, a me-
dical electronics- firm, will begin
to operate next week near the
Weizmann Institute, thus bringing
the total of the new companies
established in the vicinity up to
six — with another four expected
to open within the next few
months.
Plans to speed up the research
and editing of Chaim Weizmann's
letters and papers now in the
archives at Rehovot, so that the
full number of 18,000 would be
published or be ready for publica-
tion by the end of 1975, were dis-
cussed at a general meeting of the
editorial board under the chair-
manship of Meyer W. Weisgal,
chairman of Yad Chaim Weizmann
and the Weizmann Archives and
general editor of its publications.

THE DETROIT JEWISH HEWS

lawbreakers who protest against
laws they disagree with must be
men of highest caliber and that
there must be an acknowledge-
ment that they must be punished.
Samuel added that the example of
such deviators from established
rules, many of whom in the course
of time are proven correct in their
actions, "must be in acceptance of
punishment."
The two speakers drew con-
siderably upon the experiences of
the Prophets who rebelled, who
fearlessly spoke out against the
kings of Israel and Judea, who
risked punishment to show dis-
approval of unjust laws.
Samuel and Van Doren showed
by pointing to specific examples
how the Prophets treated kings
with derision in order to express
their views on moral values.
They asserted that people re-
spect those who express views
they adhere to but they con-
demned violence and destruction
of property by protestors.
There was a question period,
and Samuel took occasion to ex-
press disappointment that so vast
a Jewish audience should have
produced so few questions based
on the Bible.
Maxwell Katzen introduced the
speakers. Rabbi Irwin Groner pre-
sided. Mrs. Edith Frank conducted
part of the question-answer pe-
riod.
The lecture was sponsored by the
Lichter family in memory of
Adolph Lichter.
