"And the Children of Israel Shall
Keep the Sabbath," Exodus
(31:16,17) recited before the
main evening prayer on Friday
night? •
Basically, this served as a

means of reminding the congrega-
tion that the prayer to be recited
is not the ordinary evening prayer
but the evening prayer of the Sab-
bath. Likewise, this is the case on
the evenings of major holidays
when a verse from the Bible is
recited before the main evening
prayer to remind the congregation
that the evening prayer for that
night is not the usual evening
prayer, but rather the special holi-
day prayer. This method was used
to keep the whole tone of the eve-
ning in the synagogue restricted
to one of prayer. This actually took
the place of an announcement
which was generally forbidden be-
cause an announcement in the
midst of prayers would sound like
a secular interruption in the midst
of a religious sequence. It is in-
teresting to note that some au-
thorities did not even allow the
verse from the Bible to be insert-
ed because this, too, might be
considered an interruption in a
series of thoughts which are re-
quired to follow each other (pre-
ceding from the Prayer of Re-
demption to the Prayer of Peti-
tion).
