MEMORIES OF THE old Star
Recreation on Linwood and Blaine
are just that at the Cushion 'n Cue
in Oak Park . . . Ray Abrams, son
of Star owner Henry Abrams, has
molded his billiard emporiums
into complete family fun spots . . .
The one in Oak Park has a Ladies
Nite every Mon. from 7 p.m. 'til
closing, with the gals playing free
of charge with or without escorts.
. . . On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to
6 p.m., it's Kiddies Day, with
youngsters and teensters under 18
playing "on the house" when ac-
companied by a parent ... Besides
the 31 tables in Oak Park's Cush-
ion 'n Cue, Ray also has ping pong
playing in another room . . . all in
all a mighty far cry from those
"good old days" at the Star on
Linwood and Blaine!
SAMUEL GELLER is mighty
proud of daughter Michelle who
was recently admitted to the Uni-
versity of Michigan ... and induct-
ed into the National Honor Society
in ceremonies at Royal Oak's Don-
dero High School . . . No wonder
Sam's shirt didn't fit last week .. .
the buttons had burst off . . . he
was so proud!
WHEN HERB WISE goes duck-
hunting, he needs none of the high-
falutin paraphernalia which hunt-
ers like to get . . . just his trusty
old double-barreled fowling piece
. . . One time he took his nephew
Barry Silverman along . . . A lone
duck flew over the blind . : . "Down
you go," chuckled Herb, and fired
. The duck flew serenely on ...
Herb scratched his head ... "Son,"
he said to nephew Barry, "you are
witnessing a miracle. There flies a
dead duck!"
SURPRISE GUEST STARS ap-
peariing in Detroit will appear at
big Knights of Pythias No. 55 and
Pythian Sisters Dinner-Dance, Feb.
9, at the Raleigh House . . . The
evening's regulars will be Hal Gor-
don's ork and Sammy Woolf's song
styling . . . Those guest entertain-
ers will be juicy frosting on the
cake! . . . The affair is OPEN TO
ALL.
RUBE WEISS, TV and radio an-
nouncer supreme, tells about the
time years ago he was taking a
hand at sportscasting and giving
his all to a wrestling show when
the police asked him to interrupt
his rhapsody long enough to make
an announcement . .. A car was
parked outside the arena blocking
all traffic ... Rube read aloud the
model, make and license number,
with all the proper flourishes—then
realized it was his own car.
BOTH PHIL GLICKMAN of Car-
pet Fair and wife Harriet were at
Harper Hospital at the same time.
Phil is out now with Harriet soon
to follow . . . GET WELL WISHES
TO BOTH OF THEM!
Snow Bunnies Kept Hopping
at Concord Resort Hotel
KIAMESHA LAKE—Many guests
arriving at the Concord Hotel bring
their ice skates with them on win-
ter vacation. Others rent their
skates at the resort's pro shop, lo-
cated betwen the indoor rink and
the giant outdoor rink. Both are
artificial.
Ice skating is just one winter
activity at the Concord. Guests
may choose skiing, tobogganing,
indoor tennis, snowmobiling, sled-
ding, indoor swimming and apres-
sports saunas and health-spa re-
laxation.

Israel Welfare Budget Frozen; Burden on JDC-Malben
TEL AVIV — The Israel govern-
ment's inability to increase its bud-
getary allocations for social serv-
ices in the face of the country's
growing social welfare needs, will
place "a heavier burden than ever
before" on Malben, the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee's welfare pro-
gram in Israel, Harold Trobe, JDC-
Malben director-general declared
here.
Addressing a group of United
Jewish Appeal leaders, who were
completing a week's study tour of
Israel, Trobe noted that as JDC-
Malben was beginning its 20th year
of providing a variety of services
for the aged, chronically ill and
country would accept these hard-
handicapped immigrants to Israel,
the agency was "under increasing
core social cases, Israel kept its
pressure to expand its programs."

LOS ANGELES (JTA)—The Jew-
ish Federation-Council announced
plans to enlarge its program on
behalf of Soviet Jewry by creating
committees for the program on Los
Angeles university campuses.
The program, announced by Wil-
lard Chotiner, chairman of the
federation-council's committee on
Soviet Jewry, will be arranged so
that both professors and students
can participate. He also said that
the University of Southern Califor-
nia, the University of California at
