Chris' Pizzeria eight years ago ...
and are back from California about
two years . . . They took over the
spot formerly known as Verdi's,
and what an unbelieveable differ-
ence! . . . Not only was the name
changed, but the pleasant clean
atmosphere is in good company
with the very delectable food .. .
Julie's on W. Eight Mile Rd. is one
of those unsung restaurants folks
are mighty glad to hear about . . .
The hours are also amazing . . .
Tues., Wed. and Thurs. IR 3 a.m.,
Fri. and Sat. 3:30 a.m., and
Sun. 'til 1 a.m. . . . Its quite the
spot for after hours dining ... The
menu stays the same regardless
what time it is!
38 YEARS AGO AT the Pacific
Gards on Linwood, owner George
Lim's son Fon, started out as a
waiter and spoke very limited Eng-
lish . . . To one of his first custom-
ers, Fon asked, "Coffee or tea?"
. . The gent said, "Later" and
poor Fon was a very confused boy
. . . He didn't know what "Later"
was until George reassured him
that it wasn't something to drink
. . . Today Fon is a photographic
expert with General Motors . . .
and one of the owners with brother
George of Acing Palace in North-
land (Lot D), where the very tasty
Cantonese food is combined with a
fine cocktail lounge for double treat
enjoyment.
THIS IS THE FINAL weekend at
The Afterglow Lounge on W. Mc-
Nichols for songster-guitarist Chico
Holiday.
MARY BARNEY HAS been a
waitress at Berman's Chop House
for 16 years . . . and is without a
doubt one of the finest in Detroit
. . . Mary bears a mark of excel-
lence as she goes about her fan-
tastic ways at Berman's with the
type of waiting on tables in the
evenings that brings a seemingly
lost art back out into the open .
The food at Berman's is marvelous
. . and Mary Barney makes it
taste even better by her magnifi-
cent ability as a super waitress!
BOBBY LAUREL AT the Apart-
ment Lounge on W. McNichols may
soon appear on the Johnny Carson
"Tonight" show . . . His album,
"Beautiful Days of My Youth" on
the MGM label is getting a big play
from local disc jockeys who have
started what is certain to be a
nationwide chain re a ction on
Bobby's fine album.
STILL RANKED ON TOP by
visitors to Detroit is Chung's at
Cass and Peterboro . . . about a
block south of Masonic Temple .
The Cantonese food at Chung's is
superbly prepared in delectable
fashion that makes for continuous
delight . . . The egg rolls are ex-
ceptional at Chung's ... They have
a casting, recipe for which is a
generation to generation secret
and delicious beyond description.

he whispered, "Isn't it extraordi-
