Until the death is officially con- firmed, however, West German authorities will continue to seek extradition. The Frankfurt prosecutor's of- fice, commenting on the report of Nazi hunter, Erich Erdstein, said so many stories about Mengele had proven ill founded, that the West German judiciary authorities would uphold their extradition re- quests to South American coun- tries until official confirmation of Mengele's death is issued. Erdstein, 57, a part-Jewish Austrian, who has lived in Uru- guay and Brazil for the past 30 years, said he shot Mengele in a mid-river battle. "The last I saw of Mengele," he told a re- porter for the London paper, The People, "was bis lifeless body hanging over the side of a boat in the middle of the River Parana." Erdstein was put in charge last year of a special top-level investigation into the activities of fugitive Nazis in the country. During the course of his inves- tigation, Erdstein discovered the existence of a "network of villages dominated by fugitive Nazis" and learned that Nazis "have influence over corrupt, reactionary govern- ments of some Latin American countries." He said that Martin Bormann is alive and being used as a "fuehrer figurehead" by South American Nazis. How to Win a Wa r said to Hamotal, "in theory there is hope for every man, even though he suffers horribly and his suffering grows . . . in terms of time." Himmo's end comes when Hamo- tal provides an extra dose of an injection: it was the end of pa- tience. Twelve years later, Hamotal re- turned to Jerusalem, after having gone to Tel Aviv. She took a taxi to the monastery that was her hos- pital. The taxi driver was Himmo's brother Marco. They rode together without indicating having known each other. It was the end of a drama, with the arrival of a new era, and an end to the war hys- teria. But sandwiched in, in this novel, is a great human experi- ence that makes Kaniuk's "Him- mo, King of Jerusalem" a note- worthy novel. He believed in "getting there fustest." How- ever, a more famous Confederate, General Stonewall Jackson thought the secret of military success was surprise. So much did he like surprise, that it is told of him, he even liked to surprise his own offi- cers. Often, he would brief them at night, on the next day's strat- egy only to order a directly con- trary action when the new day dawned. The trum- pets marched around and around until the walls of Jericho fell down. Few people successfully resist music. Shakespeare tells us, "music soothes" the savage beast. I would send out not only trumpet players but even some of these rock and rollers with their guitars.
