THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

BECAUSE
The survival of the People of Israel is our profound concern—
BECAUSE
We understand the strain on the People of Israel of holding firm while seeking peace, of
enduring guerilla attacks, barrages and urban terrorism—
BECAUSE
It has been and continues to be our solemn obligation to meet the burden of the humani-
tarian needs of our Israeli brethren: the care of new immigrants who will arrive in the
tens of thousands in the year ahead; housing, teaching and rehabilitating those who came
in years past but are not yet fully self-sufficient—
BECAUSE
The People of the State of Israel, completely overburdened in providing for their own
defense in the face of a relentless clamor by Arabs for their annihilation, can no longer
bear their share of the cost of UJA-sponsored humanitarian programs—
BECAUSE
Now we must meet this burden in full—
BECAUSE
We are resolved that

ISRAEL MUST LIVE

the undersigned organizations, representing the vast majority of American Jewry,
pledge utmost support of our leadership and our members to the humanitarian goals of
