Orthodox Rabbi Sends
Ritual Gifts to Moscow;
First OK'd by Kremlin

NEW YORK (JTA)—A Soviet
airliner took off from Kennedy
Airport Dec. 24 with seven cartons
of Jewish religious articles, said to
be the first shipment of its kind
allowed by the Soviet government
since 1917.
The consignment was addressed
to Chief Rabbi Yehudah Leib Le-
vin of Moscow's Chola Synagogue.
It was sent by his close friend,
Rabbi Pinchas Teitz of Elizabeth,
N. J.
Rabbi Teitz said the cartons con-
tained articles such as prayer
shawls and mezuzas. "This is the
first time in 51 years that the
Soviet government has allowed
Jewish religious articles", Rabbi
Teitz said.
In Chicago, prayers were of-
fered by a group of teen-agers
for the granting of full cultural
and religious rights to 3,000,000
Russian Jews by the Soviet gov-
ernment.
The youngsters were among
1,600 members of the United Sy-
nagogue of America (Conserva-
tive) Youth who gathered here
for the organization's 18th annual
convention. They deplored Soviet
anti-Semitic manifestations and de-
clared that international coexist-
ence depended in part on the end
of discrimination against Soviet
Jews.

Why do some people fast on
Mondays and Thursdays?
It was on a Thursday that Moses
went,up Mount Sinai to receive the
tablets after the first had been
broken because of the sin of the
Golden Calf. It was on a Monday
that he came down with the new
tablets. Since his going up and
coming down this time was sym-
bolic of the Almighty's forgiveness
to the people of Israel, these two
days are considered ideal ones for
penitence and atonement. Conse-
quently, these were especially suit-
ed for fasting which is a means of
offering penitence and achieving
atonement.

Why

_t *

is a different Psalm re-
cited for every day of the week?
This is traceable to the practice
of the Levites in the Temple of old.
In those days the Levites would
chant a different Psalm for every
day of the week. Among other
things this was a means of advis-
ing the people ritually as to which
day of the week it was. A different
Psalm was, therefore, used each
day as a practical method to indi-
cate the day of the week. Each of
these daily Psalms was associated,
according to the Talmud (Rosh
Hashanah 31a) with the particular
incident that occurred on this day
during the creation of the world.
Thus, on the first day of the week
the 24th Psalm was recited be-
cause it contains the verse "The
earth is the Lord's and the fullness

thereof .. ." and it was on the first
day that the Almighty brought the
world into being. On the second
day of the week, the 48th Psalm
was recited because it reflects the

division of heaven and earth which
excited the angels and established
the power of the Almighty. On the
third day of the week the 82nd
Psalm was recited. On the fourth
day of the week the 94th Psalm
was recited because it speaks of
retribution and reminds us of the
punishment that will be given to
any worshipping the sun and the
moon which were created on that
day. On the fifth day, the 51st
Psalm was recited because the fish
and the birds were created that
day, and they "sing aloud" every
day praising His Name. On the
sixth day the 93rd Psalm was read,
speaking of the "Majesty" of the
Almighty because He finished His
work on that day. On the Sabbath,
the 92nd Psalm was read because
It speaks of the "Day to come" of
which the Sabbath is a sample in

this

world.
